    2023/2024 Pheasant Hunting Videos

Anybody who torches Sage is gunna hafta answer to Bear. Great hunting rig you've got, BTW. ;) Very enjoyable video!

    Chokes matter?

KE, you make some great points but I doubt he meant every bird flew right at the kid. I'm guessing he meant "flew his way." Apart from ducks I did not get into this stuff until about 25 years ago, but I've killed a lot of pheasants and grouse since then, and I used to be sort of a fanatic...

    Horrible Day

If a #5 hit you in the face at 75 yards it would go in until it hit bone. Probably even #6. As a kid duck hunting I got rained on by lead 2's, 3's and 4's dozens of times. No biggie. But we made sure we didn't directly shoot another guy. World of difference.

    Horrible Day

I never minded being "rained on," that's harmless. It's when the pellets go ripping thru the grass beside you or the leaves right over your head that I get hot.

    Mild weather hunting

To me the biggest obstacle with mild weather (50's and even 60's) is that the dog over-heats which causes him to pant excessively, and when they are panting they are not smelling nearly as much. He hates it but I have to curtail his running on those warm days. We still get some, but the cooler...

Lets see some pics of your Bird dogs

Oh, okay. :) Stellar Ursus Major ("Bear"), trained by yours truly. Our shooting isn't always the greatest, but if it comes down it is in the bag. This is his 5th season and we have yet to lose a bird.

    Ground swatting

Harry always said it was his fault for walking up on them without warning, but Dick blamed himself. It was most unfortunate for our sport, the idea that very experienced, cautious hunters can accidentally shoot each other, over a quail. It pretty much gave me the "blue sky" rule. I could have...

    Ground swatting

Dick Cheney nearly killled a guy by taking a low shot on a quail. The guy was in another group but decided to walk over and watch Cheney's group. Chaney thought it was perfectly safe to take the low shot to the rear because no one was supposed to be there. That's the problem with starting out...

    Ground swatting

Shooting the ground can produce ricochets, plus you don't know what's in the grass you are killing or wounding along with the rooster, such as a hen. I always carry a little NAA .22 WMR revolver when I'm hunting, but I try not to use it where the dog can see because if I shoot something he...

    Losing confidence in dog

I have thot that many times. I teach them the basic commands -- come, whoa, heel, kennel, etc. The birds teach them how to hunt. The first thing the birds teach them is to point. I am referring to wild birds. I will not let my dog go anywhere near a PR bird if I can help it. Because they...

    My shooting

I had one of those a few years ago, except he made it 500 yards, flying strong as could be the whole way, until he just went out cold. I learned years ago guiding to watch them until they are out of sight, because a good number of "missed" birds were actually hit and can be recovered with a...

    My shooting

Hey, shooting a shotgun well is for many people a very difficult thing to learn. If you learn the right way from Day One it is not too difficult, but very few people do that. I shoot a lot of clay targets every year but all that does is make me either under-lead or over-lead the danged...

Ficcohi 20 ga. Golden Pheasant Ammo

This is one of those GP #5's found underneath the skin on the far side. It is hard to see but there is a big cavity on the top. The nickel is very thin, and they are just lead (+ something like 3.5% antimony), so they will deform, but my experience is they never do, or at least very little...

    Live Pheasant Photos

Kool! Someone was taking a photo of a flying pheasant and just happened to include the next V.P. of the U.S! ;)

Ficcohi 20 ga. Golden Pheasant Ammo

I have used the GP in 1 oz #5 for several years and love them. I often find the pellets underneath the skin on the far side, and they look just about like the ones below from a cut-open shell. Only if it hits a bone will one deform. #6's leave too many pellets in the meat, that is why I...

    How to age a pheasant

I have seldom seen one with spurs as long as my bottom photo above. I'net research indicates the average lifespan for a wild ringneck is 3 years, and pheasants in captivity have lived over 20 years. So it is purely a statistics game, but I'm guessing a few make to 5-6 years. Some of the...

    Dog’s first bird!

Great story, Sambo, but you gotta start the next dog much earlier. ;) This was knucklehead's first bird, when he was 6 mo. old. He went on a firm point but there was so little snow on the ground we did not think there could possibly be a pheasant there. I figured it was a mouse or something...

    Boots

I used to do a lot mountain hunting for grouse and deer, felt Kennetrek was the best option. I have them in uninsulated, 400 gr and 1000 gr. Great boots. However, hunting on the prairie I find I can walk A LOT farther every day, comfortably, with something much more LIGHTWEIGHT, like these...

    How to age a pheasant

Interesting subject! I have been trying to age pheasants for the past couple of years. I hunt only wild ones in SD and there is no "pheasant farm" (PR birds) within a hundred miles. It seems to me birds .5 year old have only a small knub; 1.5 years old have a slightly elongated knub, but...
