What is the best pair of boots you ever owned for hunting pheasants?

Left to right Russell ready made, Russell bird hunter custom vintage 2015, Russel custom 2019, Russel custom 2015, Meindl about 2015, meindl about 2016 and Lacrosse Grange in the back ground (Gulf Coast cowboy boot). Had Sue Fabricius ( former owner Russell) come down to Texas and measure up...

    High protein and organ failure?

PPP sport I I just watch the weight…. Cut or up rations when necessary… I have one problem child that adds weight quick (GSP altered bitch) They may not be Iditarod dogs but. she lost 7 lbs this hunting season and was fairly trim at start. She did some good bit of work. Do need to keep weight...

    Pointer or flusher debate

Check cord (long leash) is the old standby. Some voltage if you like that sort of thing. Some dogs just don’t like pressure from behind and you can just walk around in front of the dog and hopefully behind the bird until they get the idea that if they are patient they get feathers in their mouth.

Cold temps and feeding the birds

Hope it never does…. If you see one kill it… if you see 20 kill em all…. Don’t let a “hog hunting” culture develop in your neck of the woods.

    Milo/sorghum

Dual magnum + glyphosate for burn down … no such thing as roundup ready Milo…so plant when you have good moisture and give it a little N so it’ll get after it to shade stuff out…. Plant a short variety it you want to walk it plant it 15” minimum spacing. I wouldn’t worry too much about varieties...

    Grassland Improvement

We use cattle and fire almost exclusively with fair to good results for range/habitat management but it never comes completely out of grazing… Our prairie habitats evolved under short term extensive grazing and periodic fire, so do that or simulate it via chemistry and mechanical means 😀 That...

Cold temps and feeding the birds

If I put out cracked corn I’ll have feral hogs on it PDQ You guys don’t know how lucky you are to not have these 200 lb olfactory genius walking food processors rooting up crap all over the country. Remy that is a beautiful wind break food plot set up, it’s no wonder you have birds pounding that...

    Harrier and Rooster

I drove up on rooster yesterday that wanted to fight my truck…..I backed up and watched him 10 minutes and a northern harrier buzzed him and he squared up to fight that hawk… hawk veered away and went on down the road. I had to drive that way and he squared up and crowed at the truck again… feisty.

Looking for a Texas Quail Lease

Yes but I’m not the well heeled dude(s) of whom I speak 😀 and one of those is split 4 ways and the other landowner only charges me in “good years” which is 2 out of 10 years so far..I’m a mid budget quail hunter by Texas standard. It’s frankly ridiculous since my grand father and I had the run...

    Pointer or flusher debate

The answer is in the question itself…. Hunt 2 dogs….. if you want a good pointer don’t let him run up birds….let the flusher do that…. A good pointing dog isn’t going to put enough pressure on birds to get em up to speed most days. A good flusher is always watching for the pointing dogs stiff...

Looking for a Texas Quail Lease

Most decent sized places with good quail habitat are also good whitetail habitat and thus leased by deer hunters. Some deer hunters leverage their quail possibilities to reduce their deer lease burden. With accommodations in STexas expect 30-40 dollars per acre maybe as low as 5 per acre...

What is a good quail hunt?

Did you and the dogs have a good time? If so good quail hunt. If you measure the quality of your hunt by number of coveys put up, then you probably scored a bit below average for fair quail country in a good year. In great quail country in a great year on private property you can hit 5 coveys...

    Pen raised bird weirdness

If I release pen raised pheasants in the middle of low growth food plot at daylight most of the roosters will be on the east side cover within an hour or so. If I release late afternoon they will wad up on the western edges. Maybe it’s just me but I use this observation to put birds where I want...

    Releasing Quail Chicks

Quail, pen raised or wild have a very high mortality rate. The biologist say 75-90% perish in their first year. This will ultimately lead you to the following conclusion. It’s a game of numbers. If the biologist are right about wild birds, pen raised birds are likely a bit higher especially in...

    Your "Go-To" gun and why?

I had the misfortune of being burglarized some years ago, so most of my boyhood shot guns be gone…This led to the fortunate consequence of replacing them….some in kind some not…. I struggle every time to pick one since I’ve only been shooting these for 20 years or less and usually try to get...
