A map showing the federally owned property that MAY go up for sale

Texas has little federally owned land…only that which the state gave them so non event here. I have availed myself of other western states federally owned lands and it would be tragic to see some of it privatized. On the other hand, there are millions of acres of marginal land ( not good for...

The hatch is happening in NW IA and replanting plots.

Hogs do it to our corn….You can throw dry corn out and they will walk past it to root up the planted stuff as it germinates. Lactating sows the worst. I reckon the big draw is the enzymatic conversion of starches to sugars pre pop that draws them. So to keep them from rooting up 300 yards of...

    Bird

My turkey dog manages to put birds up with some regularity probably 50:50 since I started taking him about a decade ago… he loves it and I wouldn’t consider going without him. I like how he gets after em after the shot and pins em down since I don’t always get one in the noggin especially on the...

    hunting sunglass for this fall

I’m a sunglasses addict I need to find a program….. I use amber lens green mirror most days, Costa my old go to but default to Maui Jim these days… the amber green mirror also doubles on the water ( inshore) real well. Polarized a must ….I buy glass lenses rather than polycarbonate….polys won’t...

1st pic. Round up ready corn in 12 row strips…..I just can’t stand to spray it in a “food” plot…. Lots of early food underneath but I guess I’ll whack it once it seeds up… 2nd and 3 rd same plot ….was going to rip it up and plant sesame but walking it today I think I’ll just take what nature...

Propane cannon ….. used to be common on Tx gulf coast for waterfowl pounding rice…. We don’t have the problem as much these days DU and weather have stopped the migration.

Food plot prep work is beginning

The rule of thumb is 10 hp per foot of disk so a testament to to the 4010 at 85 hp to get it done with a15’ offset ….that soil looks pretty mellow though. I do pull one 22’ sunflower disk with 150hp 6155R and it seldom works over 80% if I don’t bury it …..so so much for rules….. I no tilled corn...

    Spring wild turkey

Hope that my post didn’t read” hunt the roost” really bad idea ….. FIND roost(s) so you don’t have to wait 4 hours for one to walk to you….that tank in the photo where Gus ( the dog and I are sitting is a solid mile and a half from a roost at my 12:00 for example…. There is another roost about 4...

    Spring wild turkey

My turkey spots dried up (literally) in the rolling plains TX but we’ve had some hatches last couple of years just waiting on some jakes to grow up…. You know it’s time to give em a break when you have em all named 😁 Tactics…. Find roost, locate strutting yards between roosts put out a hen decoy...

    Land prices.

Don’t know if y’all seen what those things look like up close, but down here they pour these little concrete footers about every 10 feet in rows about 40’ apart….i can’t imagine that dirt going back to farmland once the solar craze dies off…. Maybe that will get grown over and make good habitat...

    Land prices.

This…. Gulf Coast Texas farm ground will return about 1% if you don’t have a really bad weather event…. If you want to farm here you lease and put your cash in the bank and make 5%… the long term real estate gains run 4%… still better in the bank unless inflation runs 6%….now if your close to...

What is the best pair of boots you ever owned for hunting pheasants?

No doubt about it AtTheMurph….when I rounded em up and saw the puppy marks, soles wore out etc…I figured I’d send one pair to em and see how it works out…. I have bought a pair from the the ownership but no repairs, so I’ll test the process and report back here in 1/2 year 😀

Firebreaks - the good and bad?

I can’t a find thing wrong with your philosophy I try to do the same thing just a bit larger scale and a different type of break. I disk them all twice a year to bare dirt as weather permits even if no plan to burn that area I also only do 10-12’ width. Because of this routine I can open up to...

Here is a strange tip I heard.

Like all waste grain ( not food plots) whether it be corn beans wheat or whatever else, it has a finite cycle in game bird diets and it’s a pretty narrow window in my neighborhood hood ( admittedly I don’t live in refrigerated country) It gets eaten sprouts or rots PDQ. So it would not surprise...

    Gun dog hearing loss prevention?

My Chessie Augustus will be 10 in August and his hearing just ain’t what it used to be, saw another post where some folks had ideas about ways to communicate with dogs with hearing loss, but was just wondering if anyone knew of or had experience with any kind of ear protection for dogs as I am...
