    Iowa Turkey Hunt

A friend was nice enough to invite me to hunt eastern turkeys in SW Iowa. After many years of turning him down, I finally applied for a tag and headed east. It was great to be in the eastern hardwoods in April. Especially when there were 5-10 toms gobbling on the roost. One morning I had 10...

The sun has set on the 2011 season-plans for 2012

Well the Montana pheasant season has now closed. Plans for 2012? I am planning at least one trek to Idaho for chukars and probably one more waterfowl hunt. Also, starting to think about spring turkey season. This mild winter is helping the birds have an easy winter.

    Ducks Unlimited guns

I am looking at buying a used Beretta Urika 2 that is a Ducks Unlimited gun. The price seems a little high to me but it has very nice wood. I am curious weather people think it is worth more or less with "Ducks Unlimited" stamp on it?

    One last outing

Yesterday, myself and my hunting parnter and his son went a field for what was probably the last pheasant hunt of the fall. 40 degrees and windy, with conditions like that our expectations were not very high. However, we had access to some very good habitat. When we parked the truck well...

    Left handed over/unders

I am in the market for an over and under, however, I am left handed. I have shot a right handed citori for years but would like to try a left handed over and under. I have looked at Gunbroker.com and Gunsamerica.com not much out there and the few that are a sporting models with 2.75 chambers...

    Questions wardens get...

A friend that works for a state fish and game agency (in another state), sent this to me. LOL! "A warden stopped by to visit upland game bird supervisor. He wanted to check with our pheasant expert on a particularly tough question he had just responded to…… The warden had just fielded a...

    Kenetrek gaiters

Not sure how many pheasant hunters even use gaiters. I love them, they can be great in snow and also in really weedy cover to keep "stuff' out of your socks and boots. However, I recently purchased a pair Kenetrek gaitors, they seam great but one of the nylon straps that you tuck the strap...

    Easy winter so far

I was in eastern Montana the last 3 days. 46 degrees above zero yesterday and only an inch or two of snow (less after yesterday). Lots of birds and not many hunters around. Life is good. :D

    Oklahoma Turkey and Hogs

A friend has invited me to hunt his place in OK for several years. I finally took him up on it this year. I was in or near turkeys every day. The 4th morning, I called a mature tom out of the roost and it landed 20 yards from me. Pretty cool, it was back peddling trying to slow down before...

    Homer, Alaska pheasants

I was recently in Homer Alaska and couldn't believe my ears. There were rooster pheasants crowing all over town. I am not sure how widespread they are on the Kenai penisula but the last thing I think of when I think Alaska is pheasants. Homer does have very mild winters (compared to the rest...

    Montana Turkey Hunt

A friend and I headed to eastern Montana for a 4 day turkey. We set up camp the first day by 2pm. We went hunting at 3pm and I called in a bird at about 5pm. My hunting partner killed one the next morning, so we came home early to work on the 'honey dew' list. Good thing as it was windy the...

    Northeast Montana winter

This article on the tough winter for wildlife in NE Montana may interest some of you. If you were planning to hunt there for antelope or deer you might want to reconsider. Too early to tell for upland gamebirds...

Last Rooster Hunt of the Season

A friend and I hunted earlier this week in Northcentral Montana. Winter has set in, in that part of the world, with knee deep snow in many places and some of it crusted over. We found birds but in several spots we also found thin ice and got wet to the knees . What I won't do to shoot...

    Federal Steel Shot

First, let me state I am probably in the minority. I shot all steel shot for pheasants. I used #6 early season and switch to #4 about mid-season. The load I am using is 11/8 #4 at 1375fps. I have shot a lot of roosters with this load. However, my question is about Federal Steel Shot in...
