Exactly. Another thing is knowing when I need to 'run'. If I see my dog is working running birds I know I need to keep up. When he locks point they probably won't hold tight for to long.

    REAL South Dakota 2021 review.

Just finished a 3 day weekend. Hunted all public. Saw tons of birds. Hoping for no heavy snow falls. Brittany's have short legs. I will gladly buy another license come January. I did talk to some guys that were struggling. I don't think it was from lack of birds as much as their hunting style...

How can they hay this much public ground

We could debate this til the cows come home. Rough estimate of the population maybe. But Perfect example. The landscape is ever changing but yet they drive the same routes. Let's stop trying to count critters that move around and rate the habitat quality instead.

So, because they used it for years means it has to work? Maybe someone finally realized it's not a good way to count populations.

You simply can't count populations from the side of a road. Is just not accurate.

I hunt grouse from North Branch to the Canadian border and back. Used to hunt them in SE MN as well.

How can they hay this much public ground

You only have so many days to count drumming grouse. A good windy day and you won't hear near as many grouse drumming. But those days numbers are counted. When is a certain grouse gonna drum? No guarantee your gonna hear him drum when you stop to listen for your count. Grouse numbers were...

How can they hay this much public ground

Roadside brood surveys and ruffed grouse drumming counts are arcaic ways of counting bird populations. And easily skewed by many factors.

A lot of complaining instead of being appreciative of what one has. A5 said it perfectly. If you didn't have an easy year of chasing pheasants in SD that's a bummer. Hopefully you were able to enjoy watching your dogs work. I'm appreciative of the farmers that left some grasslands standing...

Then it was a life lesson for you. Droughts bring on haying. Not the first time nor the last time it will happen. You'll be prepared next time.

It's years like this that make you explore. And what you find can be some of the sweetest little spots. I 'try' to hunt places once a year. It keeps the game exciting and ever changing.

I found plenty of uncut fields. Imagine your boss tells you that you can't show up to work for 3 months. You won't get paid either. Same as telling a rancher he can't feed his animals. Your pheasant hunting success over someone's livelihood?

    REAL South Dakota 2021 review.

Just got back from my first trip, 3 days in the NE region. I hunted solo with 2 Brittany's. First day saw limited success finding birds. Second day made up for it. One switch grass field held around 40 birds. Lots of hens. Plenty of birds in the other 2 places I hunted also. 3rd day first spot...
