When out early this morning Dumpster Diving and retrieved the tail feathers of the rooster I shot yesterday (posted above). With my wife's help we photographed & measured it's length. I will be posting the results by 6pm ((CST) tonight. Here's where you come in: In between now and 6pm guess...

Thanks for the observation. It was an older bird w/good spurs also. Didn't measure the length of the tail. Now that you mentioned it, I should have. Yes, looking at the pic it looks longer than normal. Don't know what I was thinking. Cleaned it in the field and than dumped the feathers and guts...

This morning at Drummond Flats. The ninth time I've hunted there this year & the only time I have had a shot. I guess persistence pays off. Love it too much not to continue to go.

    Good huntin' songs

Pretty good! Where do you find these songs? Brings back old hunting memories as a kid in growing up in S.D.

    Lots of hunters

They were using those 28guages, like you use, reason for the non-retrievable birds.

Saw two roosters no hens. Dog was working both but they were runners and flushed out of gun range. Was checked by the game warden and he again stated that the population was sparse. Saw several hunters, heard a few shots but not many. Pretty wet and muddy but scenting conditions were great. The...

Hey coach, Thanks for the update. Haven't been to Drummond Flats as of yet, will be there opening day. Talked to one guy who hunted early teal there and he said that he heard roosters crowing. Hunted 20 times at Drummond last year and shot 4 roosters. Hard to come by as you know, but that's why...

Does South Dakota law enforcement use pheasant decoys?

Know for a fact they do around Pierre, SD, as my cousin was ticketed for shooting one near Broken Arrow hunting preserve. Game Warden had set one out on private land just outside of legal ditch hunting (33 ft. from center of the road), my cousin shot it and then drove off. Game Warden drove...

    Where to go in December?

I personally do not hunt released birds but for those that do more power to ya. Now having said that, I frankly am tired of hearing A-5 and JCW denigrate those that hunt pen raised birds by calling them pseudo-roosters, and referring to your's as 'Close Nosed as if you're the superior hunters...

    Philip Area

For several years I've hunted the Hays area w/good to great success. I think you will be surprised how much hard grain is grown there. Also, lots of walk in areas and Grouse are available. You won't be disappointed if you hunt that area.
