    L. C. Smith side by side 16 ga.

Taking an L. C. Smith side by side 16 ga. this year I inherited from my grand father to SD. We typically fly into Sioux Falls most years so I never wanted it exposed to baggage handling but I am driving this year. I want to take a couple of pheasants with the gun but I don't want to shoot too...

    Unguided hunt…

Kno Knowing what I know now after 27 hunting seasons in SD, I would zero in on a line from Mitchell to Kimball on I-90. You go north, south, east, or west of that line and you are in prime time pheasant country. I hunt south of that line 20 miles but look for public access in that general area...

    Passing through SD…Pheasants Galore

Yes, we travel 1300 miles and hunt four days the first week. We sometimes come back later and hunt a few days but we could hunt the whole five if we could have a break after day three. We are wiped out after four straight days so we lose day five of the license.

    Passing through SD…Pheasants Galore

Other than my farmers in Douglas and Aurora Counties telling me it looks real good again this year, the following is all I have. "The 2024 upland bird hunting seasons are just around the corner and it’s shaping up to be one of the best in recent years. Habitat across the primary pheasant range...

    Passing through SD…Pheasants Galore

I'm beside you in Douglas and it still sounds real good there. Their rain totals in June were very spotty. Time will tell.

    Chance encounter, good news

We had lots of quail/partridge here in my part of Georgia until the fire ants arrived in the mid-70's.

Another first timer to SD Post

Been shooting early season pheasants for almost 45 years with 2 3/4" 4's, 5's, and 6's from imp cyl and mod chokes. Know your gun and pattern!!!!

    First time Pheasant Trip SD

Take imp cyl and mod chokes even the first week. You may find unpressured birds but you will find pressured birds too and that means varying shooting distances.

    Passing through SD…Pheasants Galore

Was 10 miles east of Platte on 44 last week. One farm got 8", one got 4", and one got about 6" during the rain event of two weeks ago. These three farms were all within 3 miles of each other so there are varying amounts depending on location in the state. Lots of pheasants though and did see...

    Passing through SD…Pheasants Galore

I'll be in Platte 6/28 and the Black Hills for the 4th so I'll get a pheasant feel for SE part of state anyway.

    Hatch

The farmers I talk to between Corsica and Platte say the bugs are off the chain.

Early season pheasants, do they like the cattails?

Midday cattail edges have been very good to us over the years. Surrounding corn or cover make for a great mix of habitat essentials.

    Multiple nests per season

Do you have fire ants in your area? I ask because in Georgia we had quail up until the fire ant arrived in the mid 70's. The University of Georgia has done studies that strongly suggest the decline is tied to the fire ants.

    Chickens and grouse???

Wow. I appear to be in prime time area. Thank you.

    Chickens and grouse???

Just got access to a large piece or property West River (7 miles west of river), on 44. Is this a good chicken a/o grouse area? I typically pheasant hunt near Platte so this will be a little different. I'll hang up and listen. Thanks.

A great trip to SD this year!

My Georgia group had another great trip to SD this year. About 2/3 of the corn was out. Excellent weather for the opener and the following 4 days. Lots of birds too but dead whitetail deer all over the place because of blue tongue. I may go back in December.
