Results after boots on the ground

Carptom1and BrownDogsCan2. You nailed it on the screen shot. I have a few videos of friday afternoon hunting but could not get them to load on this site. I think we started about 1:30 or 2 and ended around 3-3:30. It was brutal but worth every second. Gimruis. Private farms as in go...

Results after boots on the ground

Just returned yesterday. What a trip! Spent 6 days in the best place on earth. We stayed in Trip but put over 800 miles on the truck in 6 days of hunting. First three days hunting public spots and minimum maintenance roads. Last three days hunted private spots we acquired during the first...

When I first started going to SD 20 years ago, we went the first two weeks of November. I have now pushed it back to first week of December. We don't hunt much public land but there are some public pieces we hunt and do well. I like the crops to be out, the pressure to be gone, the cold to...

Sun setting on another season and a career for Breez

Sorry for your loss reddog. I am now on my 5th lab and know well the pain of losing one. Although we can never replace a lost one, with the loss comes the hopes, dreams, and expectations you will soon have with your new pup! I have a 4.5 mo yellow that will make her first trip to SD this...

    Woodcock Hunting.

That is what makes them so cool to hunt. They really don't fly that fast. Nothing compared to a grouse if I can remember correctly. they also normally don't fly that far on the first flush. Maybe on average 30-40 yards on first flush. We almost always can watch where they go and land and...

    Woodcock Hunting.

Just my thoughts. There is no real rush to get to the wintering grounds in the fall. But in the spring, there are deeds that need to be done and that means birds must be together. So it would make sense they are more coordinated in the spring migration compared to the fall migration. Never...

    Woodcock Hunting.

I follow the RGS and Woodcock Society data maps etc. Our flush rate is anywhere from one bird every 6 minutes to one bird every 12 minutes. I guess the migration flight you talk about would be the one bird per 6 minutes. Once they get here they move around a little but if you miss a bird on...

    Woodcock Hunting.

I'm not sure what you mean by a migration flight but when they are here, they are here and we always limit out. We generally don't hunt with more than three people in a party and usually just two people. We walked out of the woods 4 times this year with three limits!

    Woodcock Hunting.

I hunt them in South Carolina. I grew up hunting pheasants and grouse in PA but we don't have pheasant or grouse in SC so I hunt woodcock instead. We do very well and I have very detailed records for the last 16 years. Averaged 18 hunts per year, 36 birds harvested per year, 2.0 bird per hunt...

    2021 Pheasant Hunting Videos

Great video. Keep up the good work. I'm learning from you working this "thin" grass. Well maybe not thin, but short and it's always nice to be able to watch a flushing dog work, even if you have to run after them at times.

How can they hay this much public ground

Maybe a different view for Non-residents than Golden Hour suggest. I am from out of state, a long way out of state. My feeling is for the regular out of state hunter, they know the deal already and are resourceful enough to still make a successful hunt. For the first time out of state...

How can they hay this much public ground

(first posted this on wrong string, my bad) Like others have said. "You have to get out and walk it"! I have found glory holes on public land that are not visible from the road. And finding that uncut strip at the very back right next to the cut beans or corn, or that hidden slew in the middle...

Like others have said. "You have to get out and walk it"! I have found glory holes on public land that are not visible from the road. And finding that uncut strip at the very back right next to the cut beans or corn, or that hidden slew in the middle of a half section can make your day... or...

    REAL South Dakota 2021 review.

Final report from my South Carolina crew. Last day they went to a great cattail creek bottom but only jumped two roosters and they both got away. Then they returned to one of our favorite shelter belts they previously hunted on Wednesday. Not what I would have done but I wasn't there. The...

Report on my groups hunt on Wednesday and Thursday. Down to 6 guys now. Any Comments from the peanut gallery on numbers in the hunt party? I am not there, stuck in SC with a back injury, so just reporting on their success. Wednesday they hunted one of our best private spots. Shot 9 and...
