Our final weekend of season in Iowa

Seems like just the right amount of snow in that photo Remy. I only had one hunt in the snow this season. It rained and melted just a few days later.

    MN report

I assume you meant "lost 12" not list 12. If you are losing a dozen birds/season you are doing something seriously wrong. I would question whether you should even be hunting. Either your ammo or shotgun isn't up to the task. Even when I hunted without a dog I never lost that many.

    Grouse, season start, and snares

Same in MN. ID is required. I honestly don't know a single person who still traps. But I know a lot of hunters and anglers. My Grandfather (died in 2012) used to be a licensed trapper back when pelts had significant value. It was part of his income and he had a daily trap line in...

Changing an unconstitutional law in North Dakota

I wish MN would alter/extend its season too. Starting it the second Saturday in October is ridiculous these days. Its 70 degrees and there's a sea of corn. September and October have essentially become an extension of summer here now. I think it should more closely align with Iowa's season...

    Game warden question

I've never taken anyone with me pheasant hunting that wasn't a licensed hunter, so I can't dive too deep into that one. I have, however taken someone with me in the spring turkey blind and the deer stand that wasn't licensed. I've never really considered if that person had to be licensed, but...

    Dogs over 10

My dog turns 13 in February. She just finished her 13th season yesterday. She is still hunting like she is 7 years old. I only hunt her in cooler temps (below 50). Yesterday it was 18 degrees and she has a lot more energy when its colder out. I have been using a glucosamine supplement for 6...

    MN report

Nice stats. Its always interesting to see how others are doing. I'll add mine. 2024: 9 hunts, 26 roosters between Nov 21 and Jan 1 (all in MN). No cripples or lost birds this season. For comparison: 2023 - 16 roosters on 8 hunts 2022 - 12 roosters on 6 hunts (tons of snow in December that...

    Game warden question

I assume the individual in the original post wasn't carrying a shotgun, was she? There's no mention of that. To me the presence of a shotgun would be the deciding factor from a legal stand point. Simply walking with and participating is not hunting unless there is a shotgun. Would I want to...

    MN report

I went yesterday for the last time this season in the afternoon for a while with a friend. We each got one, and we each missed one. Raised about 20 birds at 4 spots, and one deer. It was a fantastic season. Second best season I've ever had with this dog. She just finished her 13th season...

    Sub-Zero Temps Worth The Trip?

Neither have I. They start working and running and panting even when its 10 degrees out. I can see the point of a protective vest around barb wire, but a heated one is just silly. My dog lays outside in the snow when its below zero for cryin' out loud. I'll take single digits over 65 degrees...

    Sub-Zero Temps Worth The Trip?

Single digits wouldn't stop me unless there's strong winds with it. I went earlier in December when it was -1 here. No wind, bright sunshine. As long as you can keep your trigger finger operating.

How do they pick closing day.

Its on Jan 1. Regardless of what day of the week it is. When I was younger, it actually ended around the middle of December. They extended it to Jan 1 only in the past 15 years or so. The year they extended it to Jan 1, they also increased the bag limit from 2 to 3 in December.

    Here Kitty Kitty

Wolves are canines and canines do not tolerate other canines in their territory. That includes other wolves, coyotes, and domesticated dogs. Even if there is a hunting season on them, their behavior towards other canines isn't going to change much. Its just how they operate. What might...

    Here Kitty Kitty

I want to say when MN had a season on them, trapping was far more effective than hunting. It was more than double. The trapping season was held in January I think, after hunting seasons had ended, and their pelts were in prime status. The hunting season was held during the MN firearms deer...

    Here Kitty Kitty

I agree. A lottery drawn, quota-based hunting and/or trapping season is the solution. Managed by each state. That has occured twice when they were removed from the Endangered Species List, only to be overturned in federal court by a judge. Unfortunately, until they are federally removed from...

    Here Kitty Kitty

That's the incident I was referring to above. I am pretty sure it was just over 2 years ago. And yes it was a male. It was about 10 miles from my house. There has been no evidence of a breeding population in the area. You need a female and/or a litter to confirm that. Young males roam vast...

    Here Kitty Kitty

While there is no evidence of an established, reproducing population here, they do on rare occasion move through. Its always a younger male looking for new territory. I think the nearest reproducing population is in the Black Hills. Two years ago there was one in the suburbs of the Twin...

    Sheriff called on me

The MN regs state a firearm cannot be discharged within 500 feet of an occupied dwelling or livestock without written permission. 500 feet is approximately 166 yards. The "dwelling" part may be subject to disagreement. Does a shed or a garage count, or does a person have to be in it to count...
