Reeds Canary Grass to Switchgrass Project

That looks great! I am always afraid of the spring spraying into a stand of desirable grass. It looks like you really did a number on the the canary.

    Rain Dance

Sunday I was visting with the friend/local farmer and when I left, I asked his daughter to do a rain-dance for us....maybe she did. Sunday night we received just under an inch and last night 1.1". I think we are a couple weeks from the hatch here. We really needed these rains, it was so dry...

    CRP species mix question

The thing I would change, if I were to redo the seeding, would be to see it they could replace or leave-out, the wildrye grasses. I didn't know that the "mean seeds" were such potential hazards to dogs.

Food plot prep work is beginning

Checked the rain gauge before leaving for work...almost a solid INCH! That will get the herbicide activated and the seed growing. Now if the birds don't dig it up, we will have winter feed for them.

CRP Contract Length, 10 or 15 years?

We did 15, no guarantee they will even offer these conservation programs in the future. Inflation and the payment rates might not have much to do with each other. Get it in and enjoy it. People, even sportsman, get hung up on the money. Place a price on the enjoyment you will get from that...

Food plot prep work is beginning

I finished putting the sprayer together, had to replace the manifold, pressure gauge, regulator and shutoff. Found large o-ring for the main filter/stainer and tighten the bungs as I couldn't locate replacement gaskets for them. The new control required a new bracket mount them. It should be...

    Future of CRP ?

Is this announcement a bit late? You have likely already planted or prepared to plant any acres that might qualify.

    Early heat not good.

I have that issue with them digging up the plant/seed in the food plots. Would like a better remedy than clubbing them! I haven't heard a good solution for this yet.

    Land prices.

There has been a lot of this locally to me, lots of land sales in the last year or 2. The heirs want the big money, not satisfied with a $300/acre rental rate per acre. The land changes hands and the new owners are into it for a lot, they now are compelled to clear out every square inch, to...

Food plot prep work is beginning

It was supposed to be 100# of N, and 40# of P & K. I ask for enough for 7 acres, I went over everything twice and had about 400 pounds left. Either cart rate goes way down at a lower RPM (turned that down to only throw 30 feet wide, not 50'), and my ground speed was slower, but that controls...

Food plot prep work is beginning

With a 4010 tractor borrowed from a neighbor/friend, I got the food plots all disked and planted Saturday. It pulled the disk just fine in 4th gear, good tires, so traction wasn't an issue, it was pretty dry. Also planted a few rows of sweetcorn in the garden. Got a good sunburn for my efforts...

Food plot prep work is beginning

When I grabbed those I-beams at least 10-years, I wasn't sure what I would use them for.

Food plot prep work is beginning

Well, I have the disk ready and the planter is now ready, but no tractor. A neighbor wants me to plant his sweet corn, he has a 4010. I will plant his corn Saturday morning and then use that tractor to disk and plant the food plots and a couple rows of sweet corn....that is my plan anyway...

    New Gun Safe

NW SD, but, my place there is getting thinner every year. I will likely be hunting for new ground this year, if it is thinner than last year. For most of the last decade, I have only been taking "small primer" cartridges. Usually 17HH, 20 Practical, 204 Ruger and 223 Rem. 3 of these are in AR...
