How do they pick closing day.

Its on Jan 1. Regardless of what day of the week it is. When I was younger, it actually ended around the middle of December. They extended it to Jan 1 only in the past 15 years or so. The year they extended it to Jan 1, they also increased the bag limit from 2 to 3 in December.

    Here Kitty Kitty

Wolves are canines and canines do not tolerate other canines in their territory. That includes other wolves, coyotes, and domesticated dogs. Even if there is a hunting season on them, their behavior towards other canines isn't going to change much. Its just how they operate. What might...

I want to say when MN had a season on them, trapping was far more effective than hunting. It was more than double. The trapping season was held in January I think, after hunting seasons had ended, and their pelts were in prime status. The hunting season was held during the MN firearms deer...

I agree. A lottery drawn, quota-based hunting and/or trapping season is the solution. Managed by each state. That has occured twice when they were removed from the Endangered Species List, only to be overturned in federal court by a judge. Unfortunately, until they are federally removed from...

    Here Kitty Kitty

That's the incident I was referring to above. I am pretty sure it was just over 2 years ago. And yes it was a male. It was about 10 miles from my house. There has been no evidence of a breeding population in the area. You need a female and/or a litter to confirm that. Young males roam vast...

    Here Kitty Kitty

While there is no evidence of an established, reproducing population here, they do on rare occasion move through. Its always a younger male looking for new territory. I think the nearest reproducing population is in the Black Hills. Two years ago there was one in the suburbs of the Twin...

Perhaps a little of both. But its definitely a scheme being called by the defensive coordinators in the league.

    Sheriff called on me

I always thought that "public land" and "rights of way" were the same thing.

    Sheriff called on me

The MN regs state a firearm cannot be discharged within 500 feet of an occupied dwelling or livestock without written permission. 500 feet is approximately 166 yards. The "dwelling" part may be subject to disagreement. Does a shed or a garage count, or does a person have to be in it to count...

    Hunting solo tactics

Just try to control the noise you can control. Obviously some noises are out of your control (like the boom stick mentioned above). If you are in a group it will be much tougher than solo, which is one of the reasons I usually hunt solo. I can control me.

    Hunting solo tactics

I know that not everyone here also hunts deer or wild turkey, but someone told me this a few years ago in relation to upland hunting: would you make noise walking into your deer stand or turkey blind in the early morning darkness? Clearly, no. You go silently and slip in as quick as possible...

    Vikings game

The defense went into prevent mode when they were up 27-10. It happens every time there is a sizable lead. The defense backs off and just lets the other team move the sticks instead of getting beat deep. The thought here is that if they have to move 5 or 6 yards at a time, they are going to...

    Hunting solo tactics

I control the noise I can. Slamming truck doors, yelling at a dog, talking to your partner, etc. Those are all 100% avoidable. The only noise I make is when my shotgun goes off. I don't walk through the terrain like a buffalo coming either. Anyone who yells "hen!" or "rooster!" with me...

    Snow

If I was a SD resident, I'd keep right on hunting through January. I wish MN would extend its season another couple weeks into January like Iowa does. Beats any kind of ice fishing.

What is the best pair of boots you ever owned for hunting pheasants?

I know this is a bit of a dated thread but I bought a pair of Danner boots last January at Scheels. I cannot remember the model but they are 500 gram insulation. I used them this past spring for turkey hunting and again in November when deer hunting. I've been using them since the middle of...

    Ditch/Road Hunting. IMPORTANT-MUST READ

I found a dumb one in the ditch today on my way to the first spot, 50 yards from the truck. I don't ever go hunting with the intent of specifically hunting ditches but sometimes I have to walk along them to get where I'm going. That's what occurred today, 5 mins into the hunt.

    MN report

At the first spot, I had to walk on a dirt road for about 200 yards before entering the cover. So naturally the dog just hunts the ditch on the way there. Sure enough, 50 yards up, a dumb rooster gets up right in front of me. I don't set out with the intent to hunt ditches but sometimes I...

    MN report

Birds were dumb today. I only hunted for about 2 hours to get these. Raised about 40 pheasants and 3 deer at 2+ spots. Many of them were holding pretty tight with the wet landscape. It felt more like early November out there than late December. All the snow is gone and everything is a mud...

When was the golden age of pheasant hunting?

The snow goose population in North America is pushing 15 million. Knocking a flock of 10,000 out won't even remotely make a dent. In fact its barely even measurable from a mathematical standpoint.
