End of shooting hours,? for evening hunters

Why wouldn't you just use your 12 gauge? I keep mine loaded in case I encounter a zombie, bigfoot, or aliens. There's lots of bad things out there that want to take you out.

    Slowing your dog

I just try to keep up. I'm still young and athletic enough to do it. I trained my lab to range pretty close though. Even on a running hot bird, she is still within shotgun range. Many years ago, during her second season, I had to correct the range with an e-collar because she was getting to...

    Golden Retrievers allowable hunting temps

After 25 years hunting pheasants, I have almost no interest in doing it anymore in warmer temps. Its hard on my dog and its hard on me. Give me 15 degrees and a frozen landscape every time over 65 degrees. Unfortunately, the trend is not moving in the direction I want it, and the DNR keeps...

    Vikings game

I don't see both the Packers and Commanders winning. Especially the Packers. They just haven't been very good lately. Commanders, maybe. They could beat Tampa. That would send the Vikings to Philly, should they beat LA. Honestly not sure if another game in Detroit or a game in Philadelphia...

    Vikings game

Well I missed that one pretty bad. Turn the page and prepare for the Rams. Can't lose anymore now either.

    Grouse, season start, and snares

Perhaps. That doesn't make a legal, licensed trapper the root of all evil though.

Here's some 2024/2025 info about the cornhusker state, conditions, and bird estimates. Doesn't seem like a completely dire situation from this, but what's printed on paper and what actually is happening in the field can vary wildy sometimes. According to this, pheasants are up in every zone...

    Grouse, season start, and snares

Actually I think its the opposite. Most would agree with Remy. Not you. Trapping is a legal form of outdoor recreation and although it does seem like a dying breed, its very effective at controlling predators and furbearers. I loathe the day my dog ends up in a trap, should that occur, and...

    Vikings game

Massive ramifications on the line against Detroit tonight. First round bye and home field goes to the winner. No bye and all road games goes to the loser. I think the Vikings will stop the Lions offense just enough times to win a one score game. 31-27 purple SKOL

Our final weekend of season in Iowa

Seems like just the right amount of snow in that photo Remy. I only had one hunt in the snow this season. It rained and melted just a few days later.

    MN report

I assume you meant "lost 12" not list 12. If you are losing a dozen birds/season you are doing something seriously wrong. I would question whether you should even be hunting. Either your ammo or shotgun isn't up to the task. Even when I hunted without a dog I never lost that many.

    Grouse, season start, and snares

Same in MN. ID is required. I honestly don't know a single person who still traps. But I know a lot of hunters and anglers. My Grandfather (died in 2012) used to be a licensed trapper back when pelts had significant value. It was part of his income and he had a daily trap line in...

Changing an unconstitutional law in North Dakota

I wish MN would alter/extend its season too. Starting it the second Saturday in October is ridiculous these days. Its 70 degrees and there's a sea of corn. September and October have essentially become an extension of summer here now. I think it should more closely align with Iowa's season...

    Game warden question

I've never taken anyone with me pheasant hunting that wasn't a licensed hunter, so I can't dive too deep into that one. I have, however taken someone with me in the spring turkey blind and the deer stand that wasn't licensed. I've never really considered if that person had to be licensed, but...

    Dogs over 10

My dog turns 13 in February. She just finished her 13th season yesterday. She is still hunting like she is 7 years old. I only hunt her in cooler temps (below 50). Yesterday it was 18 degrees and she has a lot more energy when its colder out. I have been using a glucosamine supplement for 6...

    MN report

Nice stats. Its always interesting to see how others are doing. I'll add mine. 2024: 9 hunts, 26 roosters between Nov 21 and Jan 1 (all in MN). No cripples or lost birds this season. For comparison: 2023 - 16 roosters on 8 hunts 2022 - 12 roosters on 6 hunts (tons of snow in December that...

    Game warden question

I assume the individual in the original post wasn't carrying a shotgun, was she? There's no mention of that. To me the presence of a shotgun would be the deciding factor from a legal stand point. Simply walking with and participating is not hunting unless there is a shotgun. Would I want to...

    MN report

I went yesterday for the last time this season in the afternoon for a while with a friend. We each got one, and we each missed one. Raised about 20 birds at 4 spots, and one deer. It was a fantastic season. Second best season I've ever had with this dog. She just finished her 13th season...

    Sub-Zero Temps Worth The Trip?

Neither have I. They start working and running and panting even when its 10 degrees out. I can see the point of a protective vest around barb wire, but a heated one is just silly. My dog lays outside in the snow when its below zero for cryin' out loud. I'll take single digits over 65 degrees...

    Sub-Zero Temps Worth The Trip?

Single digits wouldn't stop me unless there's strong winds with it. I went earlier in December when it was -1 here. No wind, bright sunshine. As long as you can keep your trigger finger operating.
