I'm gonna go tomorrow too. Its going to be a complete mud hole I'm sure. Its been raining off and on here and 40+ degrees so the snow is melting, if not completely gone. I use 6 shot lead all season. No reason to deviate. If it aint broke, don't fix it. Good luck out there.

When was the golden age of pheasant hunting?

Yes, it can. Geese are notorious for having it. Keep in mind waterfowl are a flocking bird so they are in close proximity to each other more often than something like upland birds are. Let's be honest, if bird flu picks off a few more snow geese, that's nothing to bat an eye over. Their...

When was the golden age of pheasant hunting?

Obviously weather is a variable that affects bird populations (and wildlife populations overall), and I don't think anyone would disagree with that. Floods in June during peak nesting or severe drought or an ice storm during winter can severerly impact things but are out of our control. Bird...

    Hunting accident in Harvey County

And yet, hundreds of thousands of people walk around carrying a handgun that has no safety. With a round chambered too. Most hunting accidents here are related to climbing in/out of a deer stand. Even the simple act of climbing into an elevated stand in the darkness carries a certain amount...

When was the golden age of pheasant hunting?

Hey Brittman what would you say the primary reason was that time frame in MN was so good? Abundance of habitat, ideal nesting conditions, mild winters? Its so long ago now I can't recall what may have led to it.

When was the golden age of pheasant hunting?

Kansas is coming back? Based on what I've read here it seems to be a barren desolate landscape and there's no hope in the future.

    Saw another 105# dog.

100 pounds is big for a bird hunting dog, regardless of breed. I've never seen one even remotely close to that size. Obviously dogs vary in size based on breed and gender too. The one thing my regular vet instilled into me since I had my current dog is to keep them from getting over weight...

When was the golden age of pheasant hunting?

My window into this is only about 25 years old. But the hayday in MN was in the mid to late 2000's. Most specifically, 2006 and 2007. Between my Grandpa, Uncle, myself, and 2 family friends that we hunted with regularly, our combined tally in 2006 was 177 roosters. I never thought we'd come...

    Velociraptors vs. ice

Crusted or re-frozen snow with a hard surface layer is bad news. Not only is it hard on the dog's feet, it makes a lot of noise when you walk in it. Crunch crunch crunch and every pheasant can you hear you coming half a mile away.

The second spot with 44 birds they were mostly getting up wild. Some of them just flushed further ahead and we may have flushed them again. We sent a bunch of them into the next spot over (on purpose) and that spot they were holding tighter because the cover is thicker there. With the...

Is there a reason for your dog's name?

This is my first dog. The next one likely won't be named Kramer even though I would like to. My wife thinks a female dog should have a female name. Maybe Elaine instead. Haha

    MN report

I took a friend with yesterday for an afternoon hunt. It was my first hunt in measurable snow this season. The second spot had 44 pheasants. With the snow, it was obvious how many birds were in the area. I'm on pace for my best season since 2007. Hope to go two more times before the season...

Take a step back and realize what you've got

I definitely took for granted the great hunting opportunities I had to hunt when I first started 26 years ago. I just tagged along with my Grandfather and Uncle toting a shotgun because they let me when I was 16. Things changed and if I wanted to continue hunting as an adult, I had to take...

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Correct. But you could get cited for having it in possession. That being said, if you are shooting hens, you should not be bird hunting.

Thanks, I plan to hunt on Monday. How deep was the snow by you?

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

You'd probably have to be able to prove to the LEO that you didn't shoot it. Simply having one in possession is against the law. On rare occasion my dog catches one alive and then it dies. I think its happened about three times in 12 years. I do not take them with me. I leave them. I'm...
