    A Tradition

It’s been a long time since I missed the opener or the last day in KS, but this year I’ll have skipped both. I try not to jump to conclusions early or with a small sample size, but all in all, it was the worst Kansas season I’ve hunted in a long time. If I wasn’t on auto renew I would think very...

Looking for field bred cocker pup.

Check with Clay Earl of Coldwater Gundogs. He winters in Kansas.

    Quail in southern Iowa

Yeah, I would defer to the biologists, but my understanding was the extended freeze last year was just too much cold for too long for covies to survive. As always, that compounds the relentless habitat destruction and the spring and summer climate change.

    Quail in southern Iowa

Southern Iowa and northern Missouri quail are decimated. I bet numbers are down 50-75% from just a couple years ago.

When do we start the push for change?

Yeah, I was always told lawn grass was America’s largest irrigated agricultural crop

    Thoughts on 2021 in Missouri

Spent the weekend in northwest Missouri, primarily public but also several tracts of well-managed private ground that has produced consistently for years. Bird number are legitimately decimated. 6 hunters, hunting in 2-3 groups for 2 days hunting probably didn’t flush 10 pheasants and only 2 coveys.

    Wiha Tracking/Management

Kind of amounts to the same thing, as we both at least would envision it. More money devoted to better habitat. MN has a WIHA stamp you are required to purchase to hunt walk-ins. Same idea, but a more expensive pass for ground that was more intensively managed than the average KS WIHA, which is...

    Best rural eats

I'm not impugning your or your wife's taste or experience, but I've had excellent "authentic" Mexican food (if there really is such a thing, but that's a different argument) in Liberal, Dodge City, Garden City, Ulysses and I bet I could find an authentic taqueria in many of the other majority...

    Wiha Tracking/Management

I've been in favor for a while of expanding the iWIHA program to include most, if not all, WIHA and limiting the number of hunters or parties per day based on the carrying capacity of each individual iWIHA. I also think you should have to buy an annual iWIHA pass to hunt Kansas iWIHAs and that...

    A true triple?

Last year I dropped 3 roosters on 2 shots. A scotch double and a true double. I'm pretty sure its the only time I've ever shot a scotch double on any species, including quail, though sometimes in a duck blind it's kind of hard to tell. I'm generally good for a few true or spot doubles on upland...

    Opening Weekend in Kansas

I skipped KS opener this year for the first time in at least a decade. I've been out twice since, to 2 different regions, almost all private ground with very low pressure, only stepped foot on 1 WIHA (but it produced). Hunted 3 days wheat and milo stubble in western KS. Pheasants were definitely...

    Opening Weekend in Kansas

In my pretty extensive experience hunting pheasants and bobwhites in Kansas, the brood maps are not particularly useful/accurate.

    Heading to Kansas

Kansas only offers a full year (365) day license. The license and prairie chicken permit are all you need to hunt upland birds.

    Opening Weekend in Kansas

I used to be a lot more cavalier about discussing specific counties or towns when posting on the internet about hunting, but I've learned my lesson the hard way. It has negative results.

    Opening Weekend in Kansas

Iowa is better than Kansas now. Not worlds better but noticeably.

    Opening Weekend in Kansas

    364K quail, 295K pheasants in 2020.

About time for a new lab

I’m very partial to Double TT British Kennels, now in Emporia, Kansas. I’ve bought 2 labs from the kennel under the previous owner, for most of my hunting life I hunted mostly Upland and a little waterfowl. Lately that’s shifted some, but I’m in essentially the same boat, a 9 year old and a 5...

    2021 Season

There is absolutely no reason for a DNR to not have a license app at this point so you can keep it on your phone.

Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks….not tourism

Well said. I am sensitive to the fact that Kansas's primary tourism drive is hunting, but I shudder to think of what the natural outcome of that is, and I think most people who have hunted there a long time and care about wildlife as a resource and hunting as something more important than...

    Rader lodge

This is a theory quite easily disproven by South Dakota, where pay-to-hunt operations release about 500K birds per year.
