CRP May Be Hayed or Grazed

This. We had good moisture throughout the summer. It’s been a little dry in my part of SEK here to start the fall, but nothing out of the ordinary for Kansas. We were very much spared the drought that afflicted states to the north of us.

    I lost her too soon

My condolences. It’s never easy, especially at that age. When the time is right, there are lots of puppies out there who would love to start a new adventure with you!

    Fall Numbers

Some areas will be poor, some areas will be good. It is what it is. The only thing that I know for sure, is that there are birds out there, and I will be out there with the dogs hunting them.

    Birds here for the unselfish.

I’ll be out there with the dogs, like I am every year.

    Worse year ever

I’m very sorry to hear that. To say they’re like family, is an understatement.

    Albino pheasant?

Saw one while Spring Snow Goose hunting in eastern South Dakota in ~2008 or so. I’ve seen an awful lot of pheasants here in Kansas over the years, and all have been normal coloration.

Every once in a blue moon I’ll see one in Chautauqua County. Always glad when I do.

    Toms Henned Up

How late does your season run in MN? I’ve found that here in Kansas, late season can often be the best hunting. Hens are on the nest, and when you find a fired up tom, he’ll usually come to the call. I’ve killed most of my turkeys in the last week of May. Trying to call one in this time of year...

    Toms Henned Up

Same here in Chautauqua County. The good news is that I’m seeing a lot more jakes, and young hens than I have in years!

    Quail

Got to about -20 here. So not quite as cold. Still pretty damn chilly though. 🥶

    Quail

I don’t think it had much of an impact on them at all. The coveys I see regularly around the house didn’t appear to lose any birds.

Kansas Trespassing Fee for Private Land

The deer population is very high (more deer than ever before) in my part of southeast Kansas. I think 5 doe tags is a good number though. Most guys don’t end up filling them all anyhow.

Sounds like you had a season to remember! Thanks for sharing.

    Hays area??

That’s a TON of hunting to not so much as see a bird. You need to change something about your approach, for sure.

    Inside or outside

As long as they have a good place to escape the elements, then no.
