Hometown Bakery, there in town, is the best breakfast I’ve ever had. Run by one of the nicest ladies you’ll ever meet.

What is the better pheasant hunting state

Right now? Probably Iowa. It’s been red hot up there, from what I’ve heard.

    Coldest hunt you've been on

-40 wind chill and a foot plus of snow on the ground. Western Kansas.

When do we start the push for change?

That guy f&$s up everything he touches, at least in regard to the wildlife in our state. Our deer, turkeys, and upland birds have all been negatively impacted by his actions. He’s probably more to blame than any other individual.

    Rain in Kansas

Poured for about half an hour where that storm came through.

    Wind

Some areas got drenched. Some didn’t get any. We got soaked in Manhattan. There was everything from tornadoes, pouring rain, 80+ mph wind, and snow today in my area. Now the air is thick with smoke from the prairie fires.

    Opening Weekend in Kansas

From those that hunt up there, I’ve heard that Iowa has been off the chain for the last few years. The birds have really made a tremendous rebound up there. Glad to see it.

    Opening Weekend in Kansas

A buddy of mine had several hunts like this just a couple of years ago in Western Kansas. It’s certainly still possible (on private land, with good habitat); just less frequently than it once was, for sure.

    Browning Maxus 2

That’s a good start with it, for sure! 😁 I think you’ll be enjoying that scattergun for years to come.

    Browning Maxus 2

Still the softest shooting 12 gage I’ve fired, even more than a decade after its introduction. There’s no doubt in my mind that the Maxus deserves a place at the table in the conversation of “best autoloading shotguns of all time”. Jeff, I’m very interested to hear your thoughts on your new...

    Browning Maxus 2

If it’s much like the original, then you will be very pleased! I have a Maxus from the year they were introduced (2009), and it’s been my “daily driver” ever since. I’ve taken countless critters with it, and have fired thousands upon thousands of rounds through it. It has been “go-to-war”...

    Best rural eats

Hometown Bakery, WaKeeney, Kansas. By far the best breakfast I’ve ever had. Never had anything less than excellent from there. Owner is one of the nicest ladies you could ever ask to meet. Western Kansas Saloon and Grill, WaKeeney, Kansas. Good steaks (and more), good beer. Buck’s BBQ and...

    Young birds

I’ve seen several very late hatch broods in southeast Kansas this year.

    Opening Weekend in Kansas

In recent years filter/buffer strips have really become popular among farmers in parts of Iowa, for a number of reasons (erosion control is a big one). K-State has been promoting the same, in large part due to the success they’ve had in Iowa. I know that on my recent travels in Western Iowa...

Not much good news in the quail forever state forecast

I’m in Chautauqua County, Kansas. The quail are here, but there’s not much in the way of public land at all.

    Opening Weekend in Kansas

I’m sorry to hear that. I saw several good sized coveys while deer hunting this weekend in Chautauqua County . There are quail in southeast Kansas, and good numbers of them in many areas. We don’t have much public hunting down this way though, and what little we do have gets run out in pretty...

    Heading to Kansas

In NW Kansas in January it could be -20 with a foot plus of snow on the ground, or it could be 60 and bare. Prepare for both. It can change in an instant!

    Kepa Iowa 2021

Fantastic! I’m glad to hear that the pheasants are still on the upswing in Iowa. I’m supposed to join a farmer buddy up around Carroll in December at some point. Our season here in Kansas starts in a couple of weeks, and to say “I can’t wait” would be quite the understatement! Kepa is a...
