    Here’s to a great season!

Spending the next two weekends hunting in Iowa, and then back home to Kansas for the opener. To say I’m excited, would be an understatement!

just a thought to bring upland birds to the public

I disagree. Look at Iowa. It was world class pheasant hunting, then was terrible for a long time. Now, it is good hunting once again. Why? Because the amount of habitat in Iowa has dramatically increased in recent years. That’s really what it boils down to. Farming practices have little to do...

    Where would you go?

I will be making a couple of trips to Iowa this year to hunt with a farmer friend. They have certainly been on an upswing the past several years. For some place “different”, that’s what I would recommend. That said, there are still birds to hunt in Kansas, so I will do the majority of my...

I could be on the IR list again this season opener

    Prayers for you and yours!

    It Looks Grim

It got up to 110 more than once. Over 100 most every day all summer.

    Dove Tomorrow

Good luck to all! :) I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little jealous. We haven’t had enough doves to be worth hunting in my part of SEK for many years now.

    Doves

Not in my area. Not at all like it used to be.

    Doves

I saw more doves this summer out in western Kansas than I’ve ever seen in my life. We haven’t had doves like that here in SEK for many years.

    It Looks Grim

I actually did decently on quail around home last season (Chautauqua and Montgomery Counties). I could usually put up 4 or so nice coveys in a few hours of hunting. If you stop and listen in my part of SEK, you will hear quite a few whistling. Not a ton of them by any means, but there are birds...

    It Looks Grim

No, I have not posted that. That’s westksbowhunter’s perspective on things. You must be confusing the two of us. I’m a young buck, born in ‘97, so I can not say what things were like in regards to hunting in the 90’s. I only have what I’ve heard from others.

    It Looks Grim

Again, you put words in my mouth. I have no doubt that the hunting (for everything) was a lot better before my time. I have also not been “fooled” by the KDWP. I have plenty of the same grievances with them, as we all do. I was born here, live here, will die here, and spend every day out here. I...

    It Looks Grim

I’ve never once said that. I have absolutely no problem with out of state hunters. Many of them are my good friends. It’s your disdain for this state and it’s people that I take umbrage at.

You didn’t miss anything. It was entirely bullshit.

    It Looks Grim

I looked at the radar frequently, and it seemed to have split you, Jeff. It was a good sized storm. Rained all day here, yesterday. It’s a muddy mess now, which I’m sure glad to see! Probably too late to make much of a difference, but I’ll take every drop that we can get. It was also a nice...

Ended up with ~2” in this part of west central Kansas.

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

Milo is still alive, but yields will be low. Irrigated corn will still make alright, but yields will be below average due to the intense wind and heat. Dry land corn is pretty well shot. A lot of it probably won’t even have enough biomass to be worth chopping for silage.
