Our final weekend of season in Iowa

Thanks. You are right, a few birds and your fingers warm-up in a hurry!

Our final weekend of season in Iowa

Well, that wasn't too bad. The birds were wild, but I shot and killed the first 3 I had opportunities to get. I was in the truck after a couple pics and heading home in 90 minutes. I did have to work my shooting hand fingers after a bit to keep them thawed, but the temp wasn't bad at all...

Our final weekend of season in Iowa

Well, it is our last weekend to pheasant hunt in Iowa. It is our coldest day of this season, I am not sure tomorrow will be much better. I am sitting here, the temps are not going to get much better, my dog is bugging me, so I guess I am going to go try it. I really have trouble with keeping...

Guess i am different then some ....

Than some maybe. You see a few members here, that get their panties in a bunch over some simple encounters with any authorities. I read that as them being the ones that think the rules don't apply to them and they reason we need someone to enforce the rules.

    Grouse, season start, and snares

That is what PETA folks say all the time. Seems like an unusual stance from a pheasant hunter.

Changing an unconstitutional law in North Dakota

North Dakota pheasant hunting in January, now that sounds like something you need some thick-bark to sign-up for! Not for women and children. Maybe the climate is changing enough to make it less inhospitable.

    Grouse, season start, and snares

In Iowa it is required to have your name on your traps. We have very few trapper left with the fur prices. The hunters will still chase the coyotes for the sport of it. Having your high energy dog in a share sounds like a poop party at best. I am sure my GSP would be fighting it like...

    Game warden question

I would say that is the reason most laws are passed. Someone exploited something, passed what was common sence limitations, to gain a benefit.

    Brush pants with zipper legs

    Winner winner pheasant dinner!

    Game warden question

I can kind of see the "participating" extending to those in the thick of the hunting. If you are out there enjoying it, I guess you are non-directly participating. It would take very little at that point to be actively hunting. I would say to not put a game warden in that position.

    Brush pants with zipper legs

If you want heavy duty full length zippers, check out the Stone Creek chaps. I believe those zippers were borrowed from the space shuttle's headliner. Those zippers have a lifetime warranty...which the space shuttle didn't have.

    Brush pants with zipper legs

I like captains idea. Chaps are warm (waxed canvas are very warm), if you break for lunch, they are easy to slip off, as many have full length zippers. For me chaps are almost like wearing my boots....only once this year did I hunt with out them....had some Cabela's jeans with nylon fronts...

Help on a special kind of wild pheasant.

My granddaughters will always come out to see the pheasants, if they are visiting when I return from my hunts. I show them all those different beautiful feathers and remind the oldest one she can come with me when she is 10. She is pretty "girly", I think I might have a better chance with the...

    Sub-Zero Temps Worth The Trip?

That is a great idea for a 2-dog hunter. Do you put anything over the truck's door panel? My GSP used to chew the seat belts if I left him alone in the truck (no crate) too long. I now just don't take him along on non-hunting errands, if I will need to leave him alone in the truck. In this...

    Game warden question

Maybe the CO just wanted her to buy a license, did he say she a not legal...having not read the MN regs, I don't know what constitutes "hunting"....I am not even sure in IA, but if someone is over 16 years old and is with me, they likely need a license, gun or not, I suspect.

    Sub-Zero Temps Worth The Trip?

At this point, I am not going out in temps much below 15° or temps starting at 50°. I always have had trouble keeping my fingers warm (trigger finger) and the GSPs I have had won't slow down and would likely suffer heat stroke. If you can handle the cold, I am sure the dog can. Maybe these...

    First birds of 2025

Well, it seems I was incorrect when asked if I would be hunting in snow here.....this is this morning. About an inch. Temps will not crack 30° for a while, so it should still be here this weekend.

    First birds of 2025

    Yep, hunt mostly Cherokee County.

...and to start 2025! Nice work.

    First birds of 2025

Thanks. No, I don't think there will be any snow bird hunting for me this season. Season in Iowa ends on the 10th, that is a Friday, so this coming weekend will be the last for me. There is not a good chance currently for any precip in our 10 day forecast.
