Cold temps and feeding the birds

Checked the feeding sites just now, to see if the birds had found them....well, I think they did. I put out the remainder of the first barrel.

Cold temps and feeding the birds

Don't have a good mower, an old 5 footer, not sure it would last for almost 6 acres. Just a old light-weight disk...will try to add a few hundred pounds to it this year and see if it helps to cut and bury the trash.

Cold temps and feeding the birds

A cover crop wouldn't be too practical if you are leaving the primary crop in the field for the winter....but you are thinking like a farmer! Been debating about going back to corn, as what our PF chapter gets is Round-Up ready. The grain sorghum is just so much easier for the birds to get to...

Cold temps and feeding the birds

Most of the larger cedars (left side of the bigger trees) were planted in 2007. the larger ones on the left of the group (3 rows) are Austrian Pines. You can see some smaller trees to the right, those a mix of conifer, start most of those in 2017, there are coming pretty good now. I must do...

Cold temps and feeding the birds

Well, the sorghum plot looked cleaned out, imagine they all are. I put out around 30 gallons of corn. Pulled back the snow in 5 different places in the plums. Back in the cedars, I threw another 5 two gallon buckets, under 5 different trees in that inside row of the shelter belt (in the 5th...

Cold temps and feeding the birds

Have only seen one bobcat in my life, have some coyotes, don't see much for feral cats here. Raptors would be my guess to be the biggest predator to the pheasants here....well, behind me.

Cold temps and feeding the birds

-I will try to take a few pics when I check things out this weekend. -Feeding in the hegldgerow, will provide raptor protection. -My plan is if there isn't substantial snow under the wild plums, to throw the corn into those...if there is substantial snow, more piles under those plums. The snow...

    Released birds - the numbers

Crap, that is almost as bad as quail. I am guessing part of the issue is the habitat they are released into. Drop them into great habitat, I would guess the rate of survival would be much better....unless those birds are more domesticated than chickens.

Cold temps and feeding the birds

Most of the food plots are 30 feet wide, they parallel the hedgerow and the others are mostly under or over terraces, in the saddles, But I would like to see if coyote decoys would work....I would need about 50 of them! There are about 6 acres on the quarter of food plots. I am with you on...

Cold temps and feeding the birds

I think I might sneak in there after work and walk the food plot that is right beside my barrels, to see if there is any seed left in the sorghum heads...if barren, I might get started on the corn. I have been thinking about the spring planting of the food plots already. The birds dig out a...

Cold temps and feeding the birds

We are testing our cover/habiat now. Hope those birds found good roosting spots last night, -14° here, guessing it is even a bit colder in the Dakotas. We have our first real snow of the season on the ground now, just a couple inches. No wind, cold enough it is loose, not packed, birds can dig...

    Shooting Woes - Help Needed

I am 61, have been using the same shotgun for close to 40 years, maybe 10 year's ago I started reloading my shotshells and still using the same components. I haven't fired a shot at anything other than a pheasant for 2 or 3 years now....something to be said for muscle memory and being confident...

    Shooting Woes - Help Needed

This does make a huge difference. In the past, before I understood Iowa was not a party hunting state, I would just about always shoot more birds that anyone else. I was not the best shot, but I was always ready and I am tuned-in & fixated on the dog. Now I will have my 3 birds before anyone...

    Pheasants Forever Banquet Ideas

I can see how the citizens of the state are much safer with this regulation in place. My guess is that the people who came up with this, don't even own a gun.

    Shooting Woes - Help Needed

#76 reply....what choke are you using? Try IC if you are typically within 5 or 10 yards at the flush. If further away, use the sky buster loads with 1 and three eighths ounce of shot or 1 and a half ounce to really make it easy. Walk, bet you never thought that this thread would get this much...

    Pheasants Forever Banquet Ideas

So long before Waltz. So is it a big deal to purchase ARs and handguns? Is your "permit" good for one purchase or for so many years? In your neighboring state to the south, as crazy as it seems, they can sell us anything, short of full autos, with a quick background check or instantly if...
