Boss vs. Kent vs. HEVI bismuth loads

I very much appreciate the work. Before getting to the text, I noticed and was curious about the pellet count disparity shown for the Kent loads. They were nominally the same charge weight and nominally of different sizes, 4s for and 5s for the other. Yet counted MORE 4s than 5s in the loads...

    Corner crossings

IMO... You're right that it's about airspace, from a legal point of view. But not really. He wouldn't be suing if people were holding their arms over the edge of the road easement. It's about keeping the public out of corner-locked public land.

    Corner crossings

The short answer is that it's unclear. I think most fish and game departments advise against it, but that's probably based more on conflict avoidance than law. There has been a recent case in Wyoming where a group of hunters were acquitted on trespassing charges based on corner crossing...

    Here we go again...

I'm planning SD again myself. If my hunting buddies will go, I might make a second trip up there. They're good for one trip usually, but the second trip is a stretch. In the past I have been reluctant to hunt other states when the Kansas season was open. That mental barrier is fading. 3...

    Here we go again...

I know we're not hunting for wheat, but it's shaping up like a tough nesting season. https://kswheat.com/news/extended-drought-leads-to-waning-optimism-on-potential-of-kansas-wheat-crop

    Vehicles

I also use the SUV version of Ruffland intermediates. I don't need them for my vehicle (Tahoe), but my wife could never get both kennels in her car without them.

How do you call your dog in the field?

Generally I use the tone feature on the collar. Occasionally I'll whistle with just my mouth. I don't even carry an actual whistle anymore.

    Removing Nest Predators

Not disagreeing at all with this statement in general and in particular concerning the market for nest raiders. But I've heard that the popularity of "Yellowstone" and its spin-offs has driven tremendous demand for beaver. Most beaver goes into the hat market. It seems Stetsons and Resistols...

    Removing Nest Predators

Good luck with it, whatever you do. I've contemplated nest predator trapping/elimination on our stuff, but never really done anything about it. We're about 70-80 miles WNW of your stuff, and it sounds like we both live in Wichita. If anyone ever asked me for permission to trap, I'd give a...

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

Good to see the moisture in those parts of the country, but most of it is still D1 or worse... I wish Kansas would get a little more of it...

    Pheasant Fest

Once in KC that I can recall. I planned to go to that one, but something came up and I didn't make it. If Sioux Falls has the facilities, I would bet Wichita does. If it came back to KC or if it came to Wichita I'd probably try to go.

    Boot Cleaner & Leather Conditioner

This picture is the 7", mine are the 9". I couldn't find the 9" on the website, maybe they've discontinued them. The stitching on the side started to fail after the first full season and might be a fit issue. While buying running shoes, I've had my feet laser measured. It seems my feet are...

    Boot Cleaner & Leather Conditioner

I bought a new pair of Irish Setter wingshooters in Dec of 2020 and started using Obenaufs on them. The leather has held up really well, the stitching not so much. I think it will be the stitching that drives replacement, which is likely to be much sooner than I'd hoped. I chose Obenaufs...

Boss Unmuzzled Bismuth load dissection and pattern performance for pheasants

I bought a couple boxes for my trip to SD last year. I only used them where I couldn't shoot lead. However, in my very limited set of data, they performed very well. I'll use them again next year where non-tox is required.

    10 Day Hunting Trip

I'll split into two 5 day trips. ND in October for huns, pheasants, sharpies (in that order). Then AZ/NM for desert quail in late January/October. It's not bucket list, but one day of conservation-order light goose hunting would be fun, if I was on the "X". But I would pick either of the...

    Reports

I would say that just about all of my day-trip hunting is central Kansas.

    Asking permission

Yes it helps to have some connections in the area, and yes, many producers are friends, but they are also competitors to some degree. They compete for buying land and for tenancy on land owned by others. I even saw two guys go from frenemies to outward hostility over a "right of first refusal"...

    Reports

One bird on Sunday hunting only a few hours because of the cold. I wonder why this young rooster decided to hold this late into the seaosn. We hunted some private that hadn't been touched since the week before thanksgiving. In addition to the one rooster, we a couple series of...

Pictures of your habitat, projects, food plots, etc.

I'd welcome anyone to cut firewood or fenceposts. In addition to this 3.5 acres, there's two other little woodlots that have even denser tree cover. The whole stretch appears below. Don't know that I've seen many locust fenceposts, though. Almost all wood fence posts in this area are osage...

    What else do you hunt?

Pheasants and quail are my passion. I hunt deer a little, really only when one of my sons wants to go. I hunted squirrel for the same reason (son wanted to go) this year for the first time in decades. I've done some waterfowling over the years, but none this year or last and I don't really...
