Marlin model 90 gets it done

That's the nicest wood I've ever seen on a 90. And yes, they were very underrated. If you open one up you'll see why. They are very simple and robust.

Same here. I have another one, also in 16 ga, and its not quite a nice. The finish is beat up and the action and safety selector seem like they need to be cleaned up. But it functions.

I have read there are a couple versions of that gun? 1 is quite good the other not so much?
Like Obi said. The Rangers were 90's. There could have been someone else who bought 90's and sold them under another name. The Rangers can be had cheaper, but they are exactly the same. I had a 16 90 and a 20 ranger. They also made a .410/22 like the savage 24's but better looking.

@birddude is correct. Marlin made the model 90 for Sears labeled Ranger 103.XX before WWII, and then J.C Higgins after the war. All the while also selling them as Marlin model 90 on their own. They were made from, I believe, 1935 to 1960-ish with some time off during the war. Marlin went into this market to compete with the wildly popular Browning Superposed.

They are great guns, @Obi_Wan thanks for posting. I am leaving tonight for SD, and the Model 90 is coming along.
