Joining this forum in hopes of getting some guidance from those who know better than me!

About me:

My name is Will. My hunting clan consists of my two sons (a teen and a tween), my wirehaired pointing griffon named Griffey, and the boss... aka my wife.

I am an avid bowhunter and fly fisher. My sons are starting to show a lot of interest in the outdoors and I want to nourish that. I don't have much to offer y'all in regards to trading information unless you ever want to come fly fish the North Carolina mountains. But sadly, our mountains just got devastated by this Hurricane, so it might be quite some time until we hit the streams again.

So what brings me here? Me, my dog, and my sons are looking to make our 1st ever road trip this season for upland. And we are looking at KS. Our plans are to take 7-10 days off from work/school and head to Kansas mid December.

I am hoping to get some guidance from those who know more than me (which is pretty much everyone here) along the lines of:

- We envision doing this trip out of the truck with a small off-road rugged travel trailer. Would that work? Or would we be better to work our trip around motels? The thought of being a little bit more "off grid" in our trailer/tents/truck sounds appealing, but I have no idea if it'll be a pain in the rear or if we can pull it off. Are there places roadside for us to sleep? Do the WIHA areas offer parking where we spend the night? Would being mobile like this make us more convenient to the WIHA areas?

- We plan to mostly hunt WIHA areas but this is a new concept and candidly, we are also VERY NEW to upland bird hunting. What part of the state should we focus on? Looks like we will be targeting mid-December to our hunt. I was also thinking about maybe building in a day where we hunt with a guide. Based upon what areas we are in, I would love a good referral. I figure one day of guided hunt guarantees my boys some success and it keeps our dog working!

I have been around the block long enough to know to not ask for anyone's "honey holes" but a little guidance is what I am asking for. I don't want to get my sons all fired up, and then us get shut out. It's hard enough to pry them away from their sports, school, social lives, Iphones, that I WANT them to be SUCCESSFUL and instill some excitement into these young men that will hopefully propel into them wanting to do this again, and again, and again!

I have too many questions to type out, and new ones pop into my head everyday so I am hoping this forum can help! Thank you all in advance.
