    Grouse, season start, and snares

I was north of Lincoln. I have hunted for 30+ years and have never seen a snare. People don't trap like they used to, so it was a total shock. I will always carry a cable cutter(wire cutters won't work) in my vest. Trust me, it is 100% worth it.

    Grouse, season start, and snares

Hi All- First off, my dog got caught in a snare last year, so I am making it a point every year to tell hunters to get a CABLE cutters, or at least know how to get a dog out of a snare. He lived, but It was awful, you don't want to go through it. Not much action on the board, but here's a...

    Dogs caught in SNARES!

One more thing. If this happens, get the snare off the post or tree or whatever it is anchored to as quickly as you can. Usually has a clip on the end to attach it to something. Then the snare won't tighten anymore. This is all hindsight reliving this terrible event over and over in my...

    Dogs caught in SNARES!

Private land. Nebraska. I've hunted this place enough, and I noticed a "game trail" heading through brush to a creek. But it was bigger and more defined than I remembered in the past, and it caught my attention. Just then, the dog ran by me and hit the snare. I was fortunate to be right...

    Dogs caught in SNARES!

Hey All- My dog got caught in a snare last weekend! I've hunted hundreds of times and never even seen one. I got him out, and he's fine, but it was harrowing and terrible. I got lucky. PLEASE watch some videos on the different types of snares and how to get a dog out. Alaska Fish and Game...

    First sharptail hunt results

They had lots of rain in the Sandhills this year, and I felt it. Never seen the cacti, sand burrs and sunflowers that thick, and I've been at this for 37 years. Really tough walking, and cover so thick the grouse aren't going to be in a lot of it. They don't hunker down like pheasants. I...

    Where's all the Nebraska guys?

Lefty76- Best thing about those pics is your son being in them. I never fully appreciated what getting youth out hunting can do until the pandemic hit, when kids were stuck at home and spending most of the day on their devices. That will rot your mind. I fretted over what my son would do all...

    NE Opener.

Will you get me lined up to hunt with your farming and ranching friends who have birds all over their places? Yeah, didn't think so. What's the point? To tell all of us hapless schlubs actually hunting in Nebraska that you know where birds are and we don't? And all of that from 1000 miles...

Any Grouse Reports from the Sandhills?

Ranger told me a late hailstorm killed all the chicks. He was right. Hunting was real poor. I hunted hard 2 days and only saw a few, mostly wild. I did have 1 shot, but after walking 5 hours, I whiffed. Yeah, 1 shot, compared to last year, that sucks. Anyway, love to go up there with my son...

    Grouse opener

i have not been hunting yet, but I am going to guess the grouse populations will be way down. rural mail carrier survey says they are way below last year. RMCS has its issues, it is not pure science, but as a general trend for bird pops, it is a fairly good. This year it was very dry in the...

    Next Few Days

This has been a great year for birds, you picked a good year to come out here and give it a try. That said, you know how those roosters are. 1 day they sit, the next day you don't see a bird. I would think anything public, good habitat, would be worth a shot. If you can find some food plots on...

    2016 sandhills grouse

I've hunted prairie grouse many years in the Sandhills, my absolute favorite bird hunting. There really are no tricks to hunting grouse. You simply have to walk, and walk, and walk, and........ The advice above is good, and may help to hone your hunting, but when you stand on a hill...

    Want to try quail hunting.

Bobwhite Quail need 3 things. 1.)Some overhead cover, brush, scattered trees, etc. 2.) Some grass, not large amounts, but enough to nest and hide. 3.) Some open ground(usually plenty of that with farm fields). Find those 3 things in close proximity("edge" habitat) and you will have quail...

    Spooky Covey

Don't you just love it though? You don't get that from pheasants, they flush and you never see them again. Nothing like hunting quail with a dog. They are frustrating, cagey, sneaky, unpredictable. Make you question your ability to shoot straight. Yesterday ran into a covey that I chased back...

    Opening Weekend Results?

bnz 41. I work with farmers, and I felt the same way, "can't blame them", but then one day a farmer called BS when I said that. He actually called most farmers greedy, and said there is a reason our grandparents didn't farm some areas, because it is crappy soil and shouldn't be farmed. Also said...
