    Blue Grouse w/pic's

I was always too excited to sleep any night before a hunting trip with my dad...still am too. I tried soo hard to stay awake as we drove to the hunting grounds but quickly fell asleep after just a few exits. I am sure he enjoyed the irony!

Anyone interested in a Holyoke Rooster Roundup?

    Under 60 days

I too would be interested in teaming up for some grouse. I took a trip to Gunnison with a few friends and my dog last fall. I could not believe the numbers we ran into. We strictly walked, no road hunting, as we were elk scouting/conditioning as much as we were hunting. Each day we had our...

    Any birds left?

Hunted Tuesday near Holyoke with my dad. We only flushed one pheasant on WIA land all day. We did bump into two coveys of quail though. Still a great day hunting with dad.

    Rooster Weather

Can we start a last-minute campaign to postpone Christmas and all of the family obligations connected to it? Just for a couple days I mean! ;)

    New to Hunting

Drew, Most hunters take a "more the merrier" approach to late-season hunting. I am sure you will come across guys willing to join forces with you both in the field and on this forum. Good luck!

    New training area!

A little pocket of birds like that can teach a pup a lot. My hunting buddy is 3 1/2 now and I don't consider this the season for training ;) What breed and age is your pup? Give me a shout if you want to get your pup some work with another dog.

    New training area!

I know that spot. I have seen the while out for a walk. I hope the stick around!

    Feathers & Fur

A buddy and I hunted the WIAs south of Holyoke yesterday with our two dogs. We focused on pivots for most of the day, and according to my bud's pedometer, walked 10.2 miles. Had two shooting opportunities on roosters and connected on both. I also peppered tow yotes who where slow to get out of...

    My adventures thus far

Goog luck on the deer tomorrow. My buddy Nate and I will be driving out early tomorrow morning to chase the chickens. Give me a call if you punch a hide. BTW - Nice tail feathers on the center bird in your last pic!

    Type of Field

With this warm weather, I found large numbers of birds in the wheat on opener. I have found hunting the wheat to be very rewarding in the past two years. It seems many of the farmers in the area are using the "shaker heads" to harvest the wheat leaving taller stalks than in previous years. I...

    Blue Grouse, last weekend

Grouse are most active in the morning and evening. I have had my best luck right before sun down. At first light, I often flush them out of trees just off the edges of canyons and up hill from transition areas. (ie...the up hill side of the oak / dark timber line.) In the middle of the day...

    Blue Grouse, last weekend

Blues can be tricky! Blue's can be tough to locate this time of year. Unlike most animals, blues actually seek higher elevation as the snow starts to fly. There are limited numbers in the front range, and those who have located concentrations safe-gard the coordinates. If you do come across...

Button Your Chin Strap & Hold Your Hats

Winds 20-30 mph in the morning and gusting to 40 by afternoon! I have a feeling that with that much wind, combined with off season rust, those crafty roosters will get the last cackle tomorrow! By this time tomorrow, I hope all of us (with our red wind-blown faces) will be sharing a beer and...

    Hail Damage

Last season I wasted opening day hunting WIA north of Holyoke. I saw far fewer birds compared to the previous year. After asking around, I was told the area had been hit hard by hail in the summer. This year, I have heard reports of heavy hail damage both north and south of Holyoke. Chadsbrit...
