Thanks for the report. Very Glad to hear public land can put up bird numbers and opportunities like that 👍

    Today's report

I love those types of hunts where there’s tons of wild birds around flushing and ya most of them are way out of range but it’s the thrill trying to chase em down and hope a few are within range. Labs are usually going berserk at that point too. So am I. I’ve had so many of these pushes where...

Thanks for the report. We also got a report from a good contact who hunts public around Pierre and he said he saw about 60 birds in a day. That’s pretty solid for public hunting! It is funny how all these reports can be polar opposite lol.

Those look like young pheasants or another gamebird. I don’t see any long tails (roosters). When was this photo taken?

That’s great to hear! If you don’t mind me asking, what general region of South Dakota? A lot of the corn was out for us. So we should’ve seen a lot more. Maybe when pen raised birds are supplemented into fields that can hurt the wild bird populations in those areas? 🤷‍♂️ Maybe someone can...

Said it was herbicides sprayed on the crops and maybe grass. And that the chicks die from ingesting that stuff. Maybe roundup or something similar. I didn’t know what to think of that. But My dad thought it could possibly be. But yeah, basically blaming the herbicide and that it’s hard to get...

I’m really glad to hear that! In Kansas our best days in the last 25 years or so would be about 300 birds at most. South Dakota west of Chamberlain across the river we’d get into 200-300 a day on bad years and 1000+ in good years. After our South Dakota trip I was afraid there aren’t numbers...

Aberdeen Area Trip Report - Oct 22 thru Oct 25

Really glad your group got into some good action hunting public ground. Did you see many hunters? We sure didn’t on Saturday hunting the last 2 hours on public and driving by public hunting places the next few days. I know I’m asking a lot of questions and feel free to tell me to shut up after...

Oh wow I wasn’t aware of that. And we weren’t told that by this outfitter we hunted with. I was sure asking our guide why he thought the bird numbers were down so much.

Thanks for the report. Would you say a lot of your opportunities came near the last hour or two of the day hunting cover near crop?

For your area, i won’t ask specifically where that is, how many birds is good numbers? Like how many you’d see in a day or good field for example.

We hit a new spot each day. All different types of habitat. Sloughs, Food plots, CRP, tree belts, etc. Day 2 was the best. Huge fieds of cut corn and around it was shelter belts with strips of Milo next to them. That’s where we saw the most wild birds. But still very surprising how little the...

    Here's my trip

Sorry did I insult someone’s hunt? If I did I didn’t mean to. I was just curious to know if their group was getting into wild birds.

    Here's my trip

I also don’t have an issue with hunting preserves either. Great for training dogs and getting a warm up hunt. Good for youth. Etc. But they should be clear what they do. I think a terrible lie is when some hunting outfitters tell you you’ll be hunting strictly 100% wild birds, and the outfitter...
