A number of the public lands in the upper Thumb area have excellent pheasant habitat. Like a previous poster said, the HAP properties can be very good too. Many are selected for their pheasant habitat.
It has been 6 years since I lived and hunted in that area, but I did quite well.

I ran my dog yesterday, for the first time this season, on a WMA not far from town.
She had two solid points. The first one produced a bird that was smaller than my fist and seemed incapable of flight. It simply chirped and stumbled off. I didn't think it could possibly have been a pheasant...
They did sell us plastic shot at one time. It was very effective. I wish they would bring it back.

Also, it is quite enjoyable to take a break and cook lunch in the field on the tailgate. Burritos or hamburgers are quite easy to make.
I will shoot (or at least shoot at) any legal bird that my dog points or flushes in range. (I have a pointing Lab.)

I very much agree with you here. A standard full choke and most any pheasant load will kill turkeys cleanly to 38 yards or so.
I once tried a turkey choke and found it very difficult to hit birds with it.
This week's episode of Michigan Out of Doors contains a turkey hunt starting at about...
Looks like someone had tried to poach the bird that I bagged. I found this air rifle pellet against my grinder plate after I ground the leg, thigh, and some breast meat.
Got my first Minnesota turkey yesterday evening.
I had hunted on Wednesday by hiking in the dark to a location where I found roosting birds last spring. Unfortunately, as I leaned my gun against a tree to set my decoys, a turkey flushed from the tree above my head. I set up anyway and as it...
