    Nasty little habits

My male wirehair (and the bitch to some extent) LOVE to eat grass this time of year. Drives me nuts. Mostly because it makes pooping interesting, and stringy, at times.

    Best Roto Molded Kennel

Dakota x 2 for me. I have two wirehairs, one about 65 lbs and the other 59 lbs. The medium crate is perfect. I added the crate pad made by Dakota, and my dogs are happy. That said, I try to limit their time in that crate to <3 hrs.

    Aberdeen area

I've always stayed in either chain hotels or Airbnbs in/around Aberdeen. As others have noted, most all hotels in the area allow dogs, but fees vary greatly so check before booking. Given how popular upland hunting is in the area, I would have though there would be a larger selection of Airbnbs...

    Ticks

Same. We find a dead tick here and there but generally no live ones. Just saw the first (dead) tick about a week ago in my part of Colorado.

    First day in Western Nebraska

Season before last, I had a NE game warden tell me to carry buckshot and shoot any coyotes I see. He was dead serious. Said they’re one of the key reasons bird numbers are bad.

    2025 Pheasant Season out west/midwest

The hunting in western NE and eastern CO has been very poor the past 5 years. I’d skip those in favor of more productive states. You can find a bird here and there but it’s honestly not worth the cost of the license for either state in my opinion. I live in CO and don’t even bother to pheasant...

    Hunting with two dogs.

Do the dogs you leave in the crate as you alternate go ape shit when you walk away from the truck without them? I have two wildhairs, and the one left behind loses its mind. MUST HUNT! EVERY FIELD! 🐶

    Bird Processor in Aberdeen?

Thanks for the reply. I found them too but only from a 2015 facebook post. No current info.

    Bird Processor in Aberdeen?

Anyone know of a good bird processor in Aberdeen (or surrounding areas)? Staying in a hotel for an upcoming hunt with limited fridge/freezer space. Thanks for any recommendations.

    Grouse, season start, and snares

@prairiepork where (generally) in the state did your dog get caught in the snare? I haven't run across traps/snares in the SW or the panhandle so I'm just curious.

    Grouse, season start, and snares

The past 4 seasons in the SW and panhandle have been rough. Lots of walking and very few birds. We'll hunt NE this year because it's the closest real pheasant hunting for us but it's been a grind to find birds. Hoping this year will be better but I'm not holding my breath.

    Colorado Ballot Initiative 91

Knew the state origin of those pushing it before you even had to say it. A cancer on the nation. Not all, but many.

    Must Haves?

Good list. In addition to the list above, I add the following: Dog first aid - both essentials in the field and a bigger kit for the truck Tweezer kit - different sizes and styles for plucking things out of paws, noses, gums, etc. Headlamps w/ extra batteries - far easier than using a handheld...

    Passing through SD…Pheasants Galore

I was just in South Dakota last week and drove south from the North Dakota border to Aberdeen. I spent the next two days driving ~375 miles around a three county area scouting public land and counted exactly 24 hens and one rooster. From there, I went through Pierre and then to points west...
