    Iowa Doves

Depends on the field and its proximity to towns. I usually hit a public plot in west central IA, visiting the in-laws for labor day. I am often the only one there. I believe too that it's in an area where guys are generally more focused on deer hunting. Maybe in the NW you have more upland...

    Personal Roadside Survey

Definitely a good cover year. But I would still expect to see them on dewy mornings on the road to dry off.

    Personal Roadside Survey

The DNR should be in the middle of their August Roadside Survey. I live on and drive a lot of gravel. I am not seeing birds like I did last year on a daily basis. Curious to hear what everyone else is seeing.

    Huns

I've bagged a few Hun. Crazy how they can thrive in such different ecosystems. I've shot one in a hay field 200 yards from the house I grew up in in eastern IA. I've shot them in ID at 4000' elev. That's range!

    Long Distance Traveling for Birds

Two years ago I drove to Hell's Canyon in my Chevy Avalanche. Slept halfway in the back with the midgate down, just me and the dog. And then parked at a campsite in ID during the hunt. Works for 1 man and a dog, albeit a 35 lb EB. Before that I had a Tahoe and love the camping feature of a large...

    New of the year survival?

I'm in eastern IA and this morning on my way to work I saw a hen and brood of chicks on the side of the road. 1st I've seen this year.

    2024 Spring Turkey Hunt

In Iowa. I'll be hunting a mile from my house where I deer hunt with family. Pushed the flocks around while deer hunting. I plan to hunt second season April 12-16 and 4th season April 24 - May 12. Both shotgun as I am not practiced with my bow. No idea how it will go but going to start in a...

    Emergency Haying 2023

Just wondering what everyone is seeing. The neighbors property has 35 acres CRP on a hill, 10 acres of cedars and evergreens, and a pond. I call it bird mountain. Essentially is the source of birds in the section. Lots of birds. Our bordering farm has a creek with buffer strip that catches...

Huns and quail in northern Iowa

I am west of Cedar Rapids and see quite a few hun through the summer, and especially right now in Aug. Last week my wife and I were in the ranger and saw around 20 hun flush off the road and fly into the bean field 100 yards from our house. I see them on the roads more than I see pheasants near...

    Nephew

There’s an episode of the flush where the older tall guy takes his work buddy, who had yet to connect on a rooster, out to South Dakota to shoot his first bird. Episode shows so many missed shots and opportunities. When he finally gets one it isn’t really apparent it was him who shot it, but...

    Cold weather pheasant/shooting gloves

I'm loyal to mechanix gloves and wear the "originals" up until about 20 deg. They have "Original Insulated" ones that are about the same thickness but are very warm. Mechanix makes a lot of different winter gloves, varying thickness ("ColdWork" ones are thicker), these are basically their...

    Managing for Huns?

A little update from my corner of the field. Plans have come about to head west to Idaho, Hell's Canyon in a few weeks (Oct 10-17). Happened to have friends with plans/accommodations/gate keys/scouting all set up, and we have family in Boise my wife is flying out to see, I will be driving with...

    Managing for Huns?

This conversation and topic motivated me to get an account to chime in with my firsts post. I just moved back to the family farm from Des Moines. We are west of Cedar Rapids IA. Dad is an old school farmer and likes to maximize the lands production (fencerow to fence row), although I am slowly...
