    Youth model 20 guage

If you can find one, a youth model/compact 11-87 20 gauge would be a good bet. Has a short stock and a 21" barrel. Was my first shotgun larger than a .410 and I shot it exclusively for many years. The gas operated system makes the recoil very manageable, I would think it would be better/easier...

Anyone give up another form of hunting all together to just hunt birds instead?

I admire the commitment that you all have made to upland hunting insofar as giving up other pursuits altogether. I don't think I could do that. In my young age I just love it all way too much to give anything up! I just long for the day I can retire and have more time to do more things outdoors...

    hearing protection while hunting

I have been wearing these (see link) for probably 3 years now. Can't hunt or shoot without them. I even wear them while turkey hunting, which requires you to hear pretty well. I had my scare with hearing damage (had to empty the gun in some really thick, short pine trees on a wounded turkey; my...

    First Kansas Trip

Thanks, I was not, sorry for not clarifying that. It was mid-late November just like this years trip. But we ran into a couple of archery deer hunters on the public. We were N Central. Wanted to go further west towards Colby but we got on birds and stayed put close to our lodging.

    How to manage this?

Thanks y'all. Sounds like I definitely need to get some of this mushers secret. Does your pup not try to shed the goggles?

    How to manage this?

How do y'all manage your dogs nose/legs/other areas that get rubbed raw by the grass on a multiple day hunt? Is there any way to mitigate this? P.S.: dog is a vizsla. He does wear a vest.

    2nd Trip

My pops and I are headed to N Central Kansas again this year. I brought it up for discussion last year before we took the trip, but wanting to hear some opinions again (just talking about the trip has me giddy). Would you opt to hunt the weekdays following opening weekend, or the second full...

    Shooting style

I connected with the part about long crossers here. When dove hunting on a large open field, with plenty of time to try and 'calculate' the lead on a distant crosser, is the only time I consciously 'notice' or focus on the lead and bead (as i sit here thinking about it). I usually miss.... then...

    Snake season

I suppose. Cost of buying some 'peace of mind'...

    Snake season

Sadly, I just had a nightmare come true on July 4th. Fred (2.5 y.o. vizsla) got popped right on the lip by what I suspect was a copperhead under some deck stairs. We were at Lake Norman (NC) and have killed copperheads at this house before. Of any of the pit vipers, the copperhead is the one...

    Blackhills Area?

While turkey hunting in the Wyo Black Hills this past May, I saw what I swore were bobwhites fly across a road and land on a hill about 75 yards away from me... Looked at them thru binoculars. Do y'all have bobwhites that far north or was I seeing things?

NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

Appreciate y'all keeping this thread alive. Hoping this rain means good things for the birds.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

As someone else already said, I don't know NDPheasant personally to know how honest he is, but the fact that he has a vizsla in his profile pic makes me partial to him from the start... Unless you two had a standing wager or agreement that for every accidental hen one shoots, he owes the other...
