    Corner crossings

Here's the thing that gets me. In South Dakota, at least, if you buy a piece of land and it's surrounded by other people's land and has no road to it. The neighboring landowners have to let you cross their land to get access to yours. How is it that that law doesn't apply to public land as well...

    Pointer or flusher debate

What do you pointer guys do when your dog gets a bird up and is out of gun range? After hunting wild SD pheasants my whole life, I know this is a thing. They don't always sit and wait to be pointed and for someone to catch up and flush them. Asking out of curiosity, as I've always hunted over...

    PF Pheasant Forecast Out

They're taking corn out as fast as they can. Didn't see any bean fields left on my way to where I planned to start today.

    Section line roads.

You can always walk down them as well to get somewhere. I do this quite a bit after the snow flies. It surprises me how 90% of people will not walk a mile or half mile down a snowy section line to get to good hunting.

    Passing through SD…Pheasants Galore

Saw my first brood out today. Out in Chamberlain camping and they were walking along in the ditch. Would guess them at 3 to 4 weeks old. Just an observation and thought I had while driving out, is that all this rain seems to have delayed cutting hay and alfalfa. Perhaps this is going to lead to...

Early season pheasants, do they like the cattails?

I would say that early season cattails are not the preferred habitat for pheasants. That being said. I've had success in certain instances early season walking around catttail sloughs with my hip waders on and finding birds sitting on little clumps in the sloughs after being chased for a week or...

    Snow depths/minimum maintenance roads

Went out today. Gravel roads were passable for the most part. Didn't even attempt minimum maintenance roads. Snow seemed to be hard packed on the south side if tree belts and slough. Figured the wind from Sunday did that. The rest of the snow was pretty fluffy. Lot of close hens. Roosters seemed...

What was your best shot this year?

A week or two ago the dog and I were walking a slough and it wraps around a point. Couldn't see the other side around the corner. Hear a bird flush and start to look around. From over the other side of the point comes a rooster coming right over top of me, gaining as much altitude as he could. I...

    Public land newbie

Another tip. The third full weekend in November is opening weekend of east river rifle deer season. I always try to avoid that weekend. Too many people driving around in, and shooting from, trucks with high power rifles. Makes me nervous for my dog and myself.

    snow depth map?

It's all crusty right now too. If it'll hold you it's not bad. It you fall through every step it really sucks. Went l 6 miles the other day through it. About calf high then.

    Wasting birds

Three the first time and then five the next time. Both different locations, 100 miles apart.

    Wasting birds

On the inside of the fence. Can't get a tailgate there. It was purposeful waste of our game animals.

    Wasting birds

Nope, picked them up and looked them over. For sure just shot and left there. No attempt to even harvest meat.
