December hunt plans

Is the bird population in ND as bad as it sounds? I have been planning a early December hunt with my wife and been wondering if I should think twice about the trip. I was thinking the Napoleon area. Any help would be appreceated.

I was afraid of that, really like the atmosphere of North Dakato but I know South has birds and a lot of hunters to. Any suggestions, has to be more birds than Michigan though.

I had a client drop some birds off for mounting today. One of the birds was taken from Napoleon. I asked how the pheasant hunting was out there. He told me he didn't even bother. They hunted ducks instead. Unfortunately it wasn't worth chasing roosters.

Sorry to bring the bad news tireguy.

I would say go if there is some snow on the ground. Lot of snow - forget it. No snow - tough decision... but some snow should help you locate and pin down birds.

Pretty tough getting around on those gravel roads if allot of snow.

Thanks, I am going unless a blizzard blows in. A bad day hunting pheasants in ND is still better than a lot of things I can think of. Still has to be a lot more birds than Michigan has had for a long long time.

It's likely you won't regret going, but most likely you would regret not going, right? :) As for hunting in the snow/cold, it's not so bad if you are properly equipped. We hunted in the November blizzards through 5 foot drifts, and hunted the close of last season when the high temperature for the day was 12 below. Both were challenging, but oh so rewarding and memorable. Beats sitting on the couch and the dogs love me even more for letting them do what they were born to do. Good luck.

PS - to specifically address your question about the bird population, my response would be "no." It's not as bad as others are making it out to be, and as you put it, there are many more than in Michigan. The state is expecting a harvest of over 500,000 birds.

have fun, i will be leaving a day ahead of you.

no snow on the ground and none in the forecast for the next 10 days, very unusual for December.

Yes the last 3 yrs I did not go in Dec. because of snow, the year before I made it, no snow but -6deg with 20-30 mile and hour winds brrrrr

If you see a blue chevy crew cab with a springer and a dumb looking setter run the other way.

lol.....you're going farther west than me......good luck, my last trip for the season.

Heading west Saturday, I was hoping for a little snow and I like it cold to hunt pheasants. I usually go the last week of December but last year the snow was to deep, and the year before was blizzard time. That is why I am heading out early this year. It is all fun, other wise why do it.

We went to Medina area about 3 weeks ago, very few birds. Duck hunting was very good. Probably ice now, and ducks are gone?

If you can, go farther south and much father west. We saw a few more birds down by Ashley. Next year we're going to try the New England area.

Good Luck
