Spring on the Prairie

Many of our guests come from all over the US but don't get to see how awesome SD is in the spring. though its pretty awesome in the fall, spring has a much different feel.

- Roosters in their best color of the year, not afraid of anything, vying for the breeding rights of their nearest hens
- Just about constant rooster crowing trying to attract hens
- Northern migration is in full swing. Sandhill cranes, snow geese, lesser/greater Canadian honkers.
- Myriad species of ducks litter the potholes in the region. they will nest in the CRP right next to the pheasants.
- Whitetail deer begin to move back from their wintering grounds to their normal places of residence. It's calving season for the livestock producers. Soon the prairie will be litterd with little calves romping about.
- Alfalfa is one of the first green things to pop on the prairie. Trees buds are breaking.
- The evening sky before dusk is occasionally littered with controlled burns.
- Hen pheasants start putting on weight for nesting season and start looking for a nice piece of real estate for optimal nesting success.

I couldn't agree with you more. As much as I love the fall time of year in SD, spring brings such a different type of atmosphere that most visitors do not get to witness. It seems as though it is a completely different world that the seasons have to offer.

The spring mornings have a slight dampness in the air with the fog lifting and watching the deer moving about. The air is still and the roosters are crowing. Just doesn't get any better!
