Public Land near Fargo

Howdy all. I have lived in Fargo for the last 5 years. Sadly, I always spend the $100 and hunt at the in-laws place in SD. I have been thinking about getting a hunting dog, but know I will need to get out more than once a year if I want it to be a good bird dog. Any suggestions for public land to hunt within a half day's drive of Fargo? It would probably be just me and my dog.

Go to scheels and pic up a plots guide. There are plenty of places within an hour drive of fargo. The farther south and west you go, the better it is.
 
Ditto on the plots guide and do some scouting. You will find plenty of opportunities in the area. You probably won't shoot your limit in an hour (unless you find a honeyhole) but you and the dog will have tons of fun!!! Wouldn't hurt to check out to the ND retriever club either.
