Yesterday, myself and my hunting parnter and his son went a field for what was probably the last pheasant hunt of the fall. 40 degrees and windy, with conditions like that our expectations were not very high. However, we had access to some very good habitat. When we parked the truck well over 100 birds got up and flew into some of the cover. The first push produced 3 roosters and an hour later we had 3 more. This was way beyond our expectations. My hunting partner's son had missed a few birds but finally got some nice flushes and finished with 3 birds with 3 shells. So after about 5 hours of hunting we had 9 roosters in the truck and the wind had died (almost unheard of).
It doesn't get much better than that to finish the season. Good friends, good dogs, good bird numbers and good shooting, in a sweatshirt in late Dec.
Lots of birds in some places, if the winter continues like this, could set up for a good year next year.
Happy New Year.
