I was fortunate to get out four times over the last week. Here are some thoughts.
1) A lot of corn has not been picked. I assume that there are a lot of birds that have not yet made an appearance.
2) Many of the landowners that I know have baled their grass so some of the cover has been removed this season. I was told that they did this in order to prevent fires. Given the dry, warm, windy conditions, it had to happen.
3) Outside of last Monday, the warm weather has not made for ideal hunting conditions.
4) Sandburs and goatheads are real bad this season. Echo's dog boots were destroyed after just a few days of hunting.
5) We saw birds, but not as much as prior years. Hopefully that changes as the season continues.
6) We walked over 10 miles every day.
7) Echo made two incredible retrieves (only one captured on video). I learned a valuable lesson; don't call your dog off when they are tracking a bird. It took Echo well over 12 minutes to locate each rooster. After 10 minutes, I thought she was just burning energy. I was wrong.
Good luck to everyone.
