Irish Setters????

How many people still hunt with Irish Setters? I haven't seen any pictures on the site. I have always thought they are a beautiful dog and was wondering how many people actually still use them for hunting?

Irish Setters have acquired the "Dumb Blonde" reputation in the world of Bird Dogs. This will stir some controversy. "Red" & Red & White" Setters have been brought along to offsert some of this. I am sure some of the knowledgeable folks will be along to help clarify where these Breed/s are at in development.
I would consider a Red / Irish / Red & White Setter if they are for real.
 
I had one as a kid that was a good bird dog. She was a smaller dog that came out of eastern KY. I friend of mine hunts her Irish, and she is coming along well.

But you have to look hard to find good hunting Irish breeders.
 
If you are looking a good red setter to pure hunting, you should be looking dog north Finland, Sweden or Norway! Here is several very good breeders and they use dogs to all kind bird hunting pheasent, grouse, cabercalie, ect! These dog's are light not like US show dog's, what we have here in Finland also!
These are not same dogs! These are pure hunting dogs!

I had a big old Irish Setter, tall, heavy, but he was from bird dogs and he sure was one! Mostly a quail dog, He would get into the thick and nail singles as well as any dog I have ever had. That gait and style is sure fun to watch, as all the setters are! The long time outdoor sports editor for the Kansas City Star, Ray Heady, had an Irish Setter he immortalized in the press, in the 1960's.
 
Do a search for Red Setters. Seems like the show people refer to the breed as Irish Setters but the Upland folks refer to them as Red Setters. There are several breeders out there if you are interested.
 
From what I have read about Irish/Red Setters it appears that people have attempted to separate the field dogs from the show dogs by calling the field or hunting dogs Red Setters. While the Irish and Red Setter are the same breed they have some distinct differences. Much like what you see in the Springers. The field dogs are generally smaller, shorter haired dogs.

Those Irish Setters look like the one I had as a kid that came out of the hills of eastern KY. That dog was fast, snappy and had a great nose.
 
the red setter is a completely different breed than the irish setter wich for the most part have been destroyed bye the show dog crowd along with the gorden setter, weimereiner red/white setter and they are really trying hard with the brittany. do youre homework and be very careful when going out to buy a hunting dog from thease breeds. the red setter is a smaller blocky built fast paced smart bird finding machine and they can run big or work close, its not uncommon to see the red setter with some white on it, thats cause in oreder to get the hunt back in them they put in some good field setter lines, same goes for the gordon. ive hunted behind a good red setter a few years back and i was super impressed with it.

I don't believe your statement of the Red and Irish being completely different breeds is totally correct. Check out this article: http://www.gundogdoc.com/library/redsetter.html

While they may have totally different characteristics they are the same breed. Like I said before, it's quite similar to what happened to Springers and other breeds. There are show dogs and field dogs within the same breed.
