Help With West/Gibbons Conditioned Retrieve

So, I've decided to train my pup (now 18 mos.) with the West/Gibbons approach to trained retrieve. How much 'hold' would you normally teach before progressing to taking steps with the dummy? I know teaching to walk with the dummy and voluntarily taking the dummy are the two hardest steps with this method.... any help would be appreciated.

I don't know the specifics of he West/Gibbons model, but dogs respond best to baby steps for these complex tasks. I can't remember where I heard it, but I was told if you think you're ready to move on, ask yourself, "if I was down to my last $10 and someone bet me that my dog wouldn't do (fill in the blank), would I take that bet and be assured to win."

Just be sure your dog understands, because when you move to the next step of FF, it'll seem like he forgot everything!

Sorry if this is unhelpful
