From my limited experience, not always. Liver dogs seem more close-coated, but I'd expect it depends on the breeding line the pup comes from.

It does make a difference.

My GWP looks like a shorthair although the pedigree says GWP. She has no beard at all and you can't tell the difference between her and a shorthair unless you are petting them. Her hair is coarser.

Of course, she's also smarter and a better hunter.:rolleyes: (that's a joke, people, don't lynch me)
 
I absolutely love the breed whether the hair is long or short. I'd like to have one that looks just like the top dog in Kismet's pic. Those wooly bears are CUTE!! Yes, I can use the word "cute" b/c I'm comfortable with my masculinity:)
