can you tell me what's the best shot for quail hunting? 4? 5? 6? 7?
lead vs. steele? appreciate any expert tips... thanks.

For Bob White quail I shoot 7 1/2 lead. It doesn't take a lot to kill them.
If I am in an area where there are pheasants some of the time, I may have 6 shot in, but that is overkill for quail.

I second that. 7 1/2 in lead is the perfect shot for quail.

I have used 7 1/2 shot when in mixed company between pheasants and bobwhites. In the old days we used 3-1-8's as the regular shells for all quail and dove trips. And a mighty haul was done with those! I had an old timer used a gun called the "quails fargo" a modified Stevens with 24" barrels, no choke, who shot 9#'s. We found hm terribly mysterious, but he sure was deadly!

I shoot 8s in lead on quail.

We use #8's here in Mn on Chukers - pen raised so they are close shots. And for a mixed pheasants and quail - 7.5's might do well. Personally I get the best patteren with 7.5's, but unless I hit them right, I do cripple a few.

Just my take...use steel if possible.

good, lead 7.5 shot,1 1/8 oz , 3 drams equvalent, sts or double a's,supposed to have hardened, american made shot in the shell
