    anyone else taking a break.....

Amen !!! Why DFWP continues to issue doe deer tags as though they are pieces of penny candy is beyond me. Are they trying to make room for the planned buffalo herd in that neck of the woods??

    Another Great Trip

Just got back from a 4 day hunt in NE Montana. Beautiful weather and lots of birds. Those roosters are getting smarter and you really need to be on top of your game.;) As soon as I get that darned lawnmower put away and the snowblower serviced, I will be planning another rooster chasing venture.:D

    anyone else taking a break.....

Hey MNM- Sounds like you got a good plan. For the first time in 45 years, I am not going deer/elk hunting on opening day. I am headed out today for another 3 or 4 day Rooster chasin' trip. I grabbed the scatter gun this morning to pack it in the truck and my pups got very excited...

    anyone else taking a break.....

I hunted pheasants the first four days of the season and then took a few days off. My pups (and I) are rested and we are headed out again Wed.for 3days of pheasant hunting. I had to do some soul searching on whether to go deer/elk hunting this weekend or chase Roosters. As I get older the...

    Season Opener

Got back late last nite from a 4 day hunt. Roosters were plentiful and the weather was great. I was surprised at the number of long spurs I harvested. In fact, I only bagged 1 rooster from this Springs hatch:confused: I'm not sure that is a good sign. The pups are getting some much needed rest...

Snakes are still out - probably not a surprise to anyone

Rattle snake bite A couple of years ago my oldest GSP was bitten by a rattler at the Tounge River reservoir. After +35 years of hunting upland birds in MT, perhaps I was due for an encounter. An extremely painful and expensive (over $2500) process to save that pup! His head swelled to the size...

    Fort Peck - closed

Additional Closures The Montana Fish, Wildlife, & Parks agency has a list of Block Management closures due to fire danger on their web site. Looks like we better be certain of access:confused:

    NE Montana

Lodging An option for lodging in NE Montana might be Sparks B&B and RV park. It is located 15 miles east of Froid. I have not stayed there but I understand they have a bird cleaning house and kennels for the pups. Phone number 406-963-2247. Good Luck Bucketmouth

    Wanted: Weather Change

Whew!! August has been a rather brutal month as far as temperatures and precipitation in most parts of MT. Yesterday several cities tied or broke the record for high temperatures (many hi 90's and a few triple digits). With 5 weeks until the season opener, lets hope for a change in our weather...

    It's Time!!!

This year it is a moot issue as I did not draw a 'Lope tag. However, last year it sent me scrambling as I wanted to enjoy the season opener for both goats and chinx. For the first time in my life I did not get an antelope tag for District 700 (half of eastern MT). Guess it is my own fault as I...

    It's Time!!!

Pheasant/ Antelope season Does anyone know the reason DFWP and the Commissioners set the season opener for pheasants and antelope the same day?? I lobbied hard against the same day opener, but it fell on deaf ears. Additionally none of the Commissioners had the courtesy to respond to my...

    New...Open Fields Program

Mt ugbep I, as a landowner in Eastern MT, tried "planting" pheasants through the UGBEP program in 2010. The Program paid $8 per bird plus transportation costs to an individual that raised them until release time. I did not incur any expense for the birds. The property was clearly marked as open...

    New...Open Fields Program

Russian Olive trees For the life of me I cannot understand why anyone would destroy a RO tree, particularly in eastern MT where trees can be a premium. They provide excellent habitat and food for upland game birds. As I drive thru my native eastern Montana, I admire the miles of Russian Olive...

    Sharptail opener

CRP Haying/Grazing The USDA is allowing haying on CRP fields in numerous Montana counties. Hope those young birds get the heck out of the way of the swathers, rakes, and bailers. The drought in parts of MT are becoming crtical and we have alot of summer left. YIKES!!!

    Looking Good!!

I was in NE Montana last week and it appears the survival rate for the pheasant chicks was good (broods of 6-8 are common). They were able to fly short distances. Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope we see them again this Fall. Bead on a Bird Bucketmouth

    Variable precipitation

I looked at the year to date precipitation amounts in a few towns in eastern MT. I found quite a variance and have posted the % of normal precipitation as follows; Culbertson 91% Glasgow 133% Malta 102% Baker 69% Miles City 46% Sidney 33% The Baker, Miles City, and Sidney areas appear to be...

Might plan a trip to MT this fall for sharpies and huns

Montnana Sharps and Huns As a 4th generation Montanan, I have found many landowners are receptive to Sharp and Hun hunters (not so much for those regal pheasants). Anywhere in the eastern 1/2 of the state will hold birds. Don't hesitate to knock on doors and ask for permission when you see good...
