We didn't see near the pheasants you guys are talking but the quail were up id say.

Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

I try hard not to take those long stretchy shots for a variety of reasons I guess. I figure it's makes them that much spookier for me the next time or the next guy if they are clean misses. But in the event a couple pellets land but don't stone them I assume they go off and die anyhow. A chicken...

    Season Assessment

I crossed to the dark side on that trip and over dinner we leased the waterways and some pasture from the farmer we have permission on. The existing farmer hays them and briefly runs cattle on the little pasture there is. It feels dirty and is the first "pay to play" situation I've had to do...

    Season Assessment

The area I go and am fortunate to have some private access had quail numbers better than I've seen in a lot of years, saw a few distant pheasant but really hot the days we were out. We had great success on quail on private then hunted some public ground in the exact same area and didn't see a...

    First Kansas Trip

If you get on birds on public land that late in the season you'll have earned them. When hunting during deer season best practice is if you see an old beat up pickup that looks like a local and his kid move on. If it's a shiny Texas, Louisiana, or Georgia plates you go right on ahead and hunt it😉

    Indoor Hunting Dogs

It's changed for me over the years as well, I grew up under the thought of you can't keep good hunting dogs inside it'll ruin them. The older I've gotten the more they've been inside the house and the truck cab haha. My dogs now all are inside at night if not most of the day also for a couple...

    Pheasant Industry in SD

I don't know if I had heard it, thought I read it somewhere, or what but I was under the impression the state was supplementing birds on public grounds, especially state grounds and PATHs. I feel like I've seen UTV/truck tracks around some of those pieces that don't appear to be farm vehicles...

Do you add anything to your dogs water while hunting

In college I bought a new gas can for my water tote and used that thing for years. Never failed someone would see it and say"gas?". I just got where my quick reply was " high test makes him run harder" and watch the stupid faces as they walked off trying to figure out what they just saw

Dog nutrition/supplementing on heavy hunting days

I would hate to think the calories that get burned on a hard day's hunt , let alone a few day trip. I'll give them whatever they'll eat at night and usually give them some leftovers or a burger or something too. My pointers are usually not big eaters so I figure even if they'll eat their dog...

    Rain hunting

Best strategy for rain is getting a case of beer and heading back to the Airbnb

Looking for a new hunting vehicle

What if I want to eat at the country club then snag a soccer mom and take her to the backwoods while looking cool the whole time?

Best all around e-collar for training and hunting

I'm not sure there is? I use my beeper just as a locator in heavy cover when I lose sight of them, I don't know if I'd need that feature if my handheld pointed to where the dogs was and how far.
