Woodcock Season and Habitat

Hello everyone.

This is my first year hunting with my 7 month old pointer.

I've been struggling to find woodcock for him with about 230 or so hours of venturing in decent woodcock habitat from early Sept through today. Within that time, we only found 1 woodcock in Cedarburg and that was about a week before the season opened!

Since we are in the southeast portion of the state, we are limited to about 1 hr of Milwaukee. We've explored the young aspen and swampy areas in the Vernon wildlife Area, Ottawa Field trial grounds (by Dousman), and the Cedarburg Bog. Does anyone have any pointers as it pertains to woodcock habitat near Milwaukee? There arent a whole lot of prime aspen cuts in the southern half of the state and we've resorted to venturing in boggy habitat, or the edges of swamps, and young forest.

What's truly incredible is that people say they're everywhere - and they might be - but I'm just not finding'em. With that said, my pup is a bird finding machine (everything else needs work, though) - if they're in our immediate area, he'll sniff'em.

Thank you!
