Uplands?

Why do they call it upland hunting? It seems like a good part of the time with grouse and pheasant you're down in a lowland cruising a swamp or slough edge.

Wikipedia says, "Upland hunting is an American term for a form of hunting in which the hunter pursues upland birds including quail, pheasant, grouse, woodcock, prairie chicken, chukar, grey partridge, and other landfowls. Unlike aquatic birds (waterfowls and shorebirds), upland birds are terrestrial and tend to be found on the dry lands above the high mark of waterbodies."

I, personally, don't call it that. I call it pheasant hunting. Or grouse hunting, quail hunting, etc. Another term that's way too vague for me is "bird hunting". I mean, can you be much less specific? ;)

I just go by what my dog calls it. She calls it, “Bird Hunting!”

Call it what you want. It all means basically the same thing. Upland Hunting is a term that's inclusive of pretty much all game birds except waterfowl. This morning I was Grouse Hunting! :)
