Today's Hunt

Had the pheasant flu today so took off and headed out to hunt with a couple buddies. Pulled up to one of our honey holes and it was fenced off, cattle had been in it. Drove around to a few more spots and most where disked up and planted to winter wheat. Pretty disappointing stuff. Seen two roosters in the area and both fell to the over/under. One was a very young bird, barely turning colors and about the size of a hen. Headed South a ways and hunted some other places we've done well in the past and seen a few, not many, did miss one rooster. Walked some good looking stuff, with feed and water close by and didn't kick many birds. Seen 5 roosters on the day and maybe 2-3 hens. Frustrating to say the least. I did kill one of the roosters over my dogs point, so thankful for that. But, I feel bad when the dogs work their rears off for very little reward. Came home with two birds, kids and I enjoyed them fried up for supper. Tweaked my knee pretty good somehow, getting old sucks. Although after a few whiskey drinks this evening it's feeling pretty good! Going to be warm tomorrow, think I'll go chase deer.

That was a pretty fair day of hunting considering the bird numbers.
And yes getting older sucks, those injuries that happened when I was younger are coming back for more.

Glad to hear there is something out there to trip over! Good to get young dogs on anything. My time is coming soon.

Do you prefer WIHA areas to Wildlife management areas around lakes? I went to both opening weekend seen 4 hens 2 roosters in the WIHA and found a large covey at Byron Walker. Planning another trip farther north soon around Great Bend and was wondering if anybody had any suggestions?
