Prairie Grouse hunt in Potter or Walworth counties?

I will be pheasant hunting west of Aberdeen in October and I have never hunted sharptails or prairie chickens. Given where I'm staying, I could drive 100 miles west to Potter or Walworth County. From the SDGF survey and distn maps, it looks like Potter would have both spp. Would it be a waste of time? My expectations would be very low- I would like to maybe shoot one! The alternative would be to drive another 30 miles and get west of Mobridge? Any advice?

If your expectations are to hunt them for a day in that area and get the opportunity to kill one I think that is a realistic goal. Find the right cover type and spend your time in the correct cover and you should come across some. There is some good public ground that has the right cover on it to give you those chances. Good luck!
