GPS with Maps

I need a new GPS
I'd like to be able to get one that I can download maps.

Question is:
If I download the maps from the SD DNR - like these
http://www.sdgfp.info/wildlife/gps/index.asp

and I had this GPS
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t..._redir&parentType=index&indexId=cat21350&rid=

could I then pull up any given walk in area and follow my GPS to that area similar to what I do now with the GPS in my truck? Would it give me turn by turn instructions, etc?

Im headed to SD alone this year so following a mapbook will be much more difficult without having a navigator to tell me when and where to turn.

Any other GPS's you would recommend if this is possible? I have had a couple of Garmins in the past so some familiarity with them is a bonus.

Thoughts?

Mike ,
I have a garmin nuvi. Spent around $200 at Walmart. Primarily use it in the truck. Until I tried to download off SD websites interactive maps. It worked. Driving down the road I get all the info the Atlas gives. What I have done now is started taking it out of the cradle and taking it with while hunting and turning it on every now and then to make sure I'm still in bounds of the area.
Hope that helps!

Mike I took my Lowrance fish finder and GPS out of my boat and downloaded the SD state maps. It appears to have worked. Haven't tried it yet. I also have Map Create to make custom maps for driving. They work great on the Lowrance.

Lowrance Expedition C

I have the Lowrance Expedition C. http://www.lowrance.com/Products/Outdoors/iFINDER-Expedition-C/

Love it! Got the map package (Map Create 7) with it which allows you to download maps. This will give you many public hunting spots but not all so I use a current map book as well.

This was a few years ago but from what I remember the biggest card it would take was 1 GB. So I bought a 1 GB card but had an issue loading a map that size. It actually screwed up the card reader (you have to use Lowrance's card reader). I called the company and they were great. They said they were aware of this issue and were working on it, sent me a new card reader and asked for mine back so they could diagnose it. I loaded a 500 MB map and it worked fine. This gives me both Dakotas, MN, WI, and half of IA, which is all I need.

Great color screen with good resolution. Decent amount of icons but would like more.

It does eat batteries. I mainly use it in the truck with external power but do use it to find my deer stand in the dark. The two AA bateries only last about one day.

If the company asked me for suggestions I would say make it lighter and rechargeable.

The have a new model out but I have not looked into it much. http://www.lowrance.com/Products/Outdoors/Endura-Sierra/

Good luck!
