Does it matter where you register your dogs chip?

I have a new puppy. In the past the breeder always registered the chip for me. This time he told me to register it. I am wondering if it matters where I register the chip. There seem to be several places online to register them.

Most share data bases, I would start with AKC or HomeAgain. Chip readers have become universal.

doesn't the chip tag provide a number or site or a brand/company name?
