I have hunted prairie chickens in SD for 15 years. I hunt some private and public lands around Pierre. Hope you like LOTS of walking, and I mean many miles a day. But I would rather that than work......
:-('''''' Always difficult to lose a hunting dog. I've lost 4 in 25 years. Gets harder with each dog. Mine are cremated. They will be scattered with my cremains when the time comes.
OK. thanks for the information. That's pretty much how I would hunt. Guess this coming season will be sparse, unless some good summer rains materialize.

I come to SD every year hunting prairie grouse & pheasants. I stay in Chamberlain. Nice little town w/ nice people. it is the highlight of my hunting season.
Over time, we may be able to abandon actual shooting - collect a limit without firing a shot.
Had a Brittany that would do that to preserve (read fat) pheasants. Would catch them in mid air!
I agree to snake training. It works, but I still had two of my setters bit around the house. The were putting their nose in holes. Trained them out of that as well, now.
...and the shells you are buying better be non-toxic. That EO is coming sooner rather than later for all Federal lands. Oh, and one other thing. Internet sales of ammo --- bye, bye.
Have never hunted Kansas before, and the Grasslands are only 5 hours or so from N. New Mexico. For a short (3 days hunting) trip I figure it might be an adventure for my dogs. We don't mind long treks, as we are used to SD for Prairie grouse.
New to this forum.
Thinking of SW Kansas for Pheasants/quail next Dec. Specifically the Grasslands near Elkhart. Just me & my two setters. Not looking for limits, just a chance at Pheasants & Quail. Don't Mind long walks. Any suggestions?
