Looking into my first double gun!

I have serval over and under guns and made the mistake of buying a cheaper brand when I first got into them and hated lugging it around. It was heavy and bulky, it shot ok but wasn’t what I was expecting. Once I got into the quality doubles it opened up a whole new hunting experience for me...

    Acl surgery

Found this on Sirius Vet website: Did you know that four-legged athletes' bones need AT LEAST six (6) weeks to heal after a fracture repair or a bone cutting orthopedic procedure? Well, they do. In addition, they will lose strength and muscle mass for 6-8 weeks after surgery. This makes...

    Acl surgery

My English pointer had both TPLO surgeries. I was instructed by the vet not to hunt her until she has trust in her own bad leg, otherwise they favor it and put to much stress on the good leg and blow it out within a year. Don’t know if your vet told you, but theres a very high percentage that...

    Pre/Post Hunt Dog Supplements

I think one thing to keep in mind is caloric intake. If you look at what dry food your feeding your dog now, 1 cup probably has a caloric intake of around 450-500 calories. So if you supplement with only chicken and rice or something else, you will need to atleast match the caloric intake or...

Semi auto or break action shotgun?

I think it all depends on the mood of the day, the feeling you get when you wake up that morning. Is it a casual hunting day where you’re going to take in the sights and enjoy the day in the field with the dog or is the snow coming down sideways and you’re going to battle against the pheasant...

Experiences going from one bird dog to two?

I can’t speak for flushing dogs as I’m a pointer hunter. I own two English pointers, a German shorthair and a Brittany. I hunt all of them individually leaving me with fresh dogs all the time. Knowing each dogs strength and weakness I pick a dog based on field conditions.

    Hunt Wounded Dogs

Chessie; I haven’t given up on her. I’d absolutely love if she continued hunting the way she does today, but I’d also be just as happy to get her to hunt with me a field a day for the rest of her life. She’s my best friend and Im just happy she’s not fully retired. She still has a lot of birds...

    Hunt Wounded Dogs

My English pointer had TPLO surgery last year and had to sit last season out. She blew it out the weekend before the opener while we were doing some refresher training. The vet told us within 1-2 years the other leg would most likely blow out. On Friday the 13th this season walking out of our...

    Bird cleaning in Mitchell

I keep all my birds whole. I like to do a dry rub on my pheasant, then bacon wrap the entire bird and smoke it on the Traeger (low heat) for a few hours until the internal temp reads 165.

    Hunt Wounded Dogs

I had both my dogs wounded this year already. My 2 year old Brittany pursued a downed rooster through a barbed wire fence and got 6 stitches to her chest to prove that she got the bird. My 6 year old English pointer blew out her rear knee and just had TPLO surgery on Thursday. My season has...

    Bird cleaning in Mitchell

I just spoke with Tami. Last weekend she shut it down due to COVID. She deals exclusively with out of state hunters and was afraid of the exposure. As you all know, COVID numbers are going up, I don’t blame her for shutting it down, it’s her home business and I wouldn’t want my entire family...

    15 Minutes...

Last Tuesday when it was snowing, my wife and I decided to go out driving around and see if we could get on a bird or two. We saw a rooster dart into some cat tails roadside. We pulled over, unloaded the dog and started walking a long strip of cat tails. 10 minutes later we had 6 birds in...

    lunch on the hunt

I have a 2000 watt inverter in my truck, I run an extension cord to my tailgate and plug in the George foreman electric grill. It’s hot in about 8 minutes and can cook anything a bbq grille can cook. I personally enjoy slapping a sandwich on there and closing the lid. It heats the meat, melts...
