    Challenging Season in Colorado

We hunted some new private land in Western, Nebraska as well as some of our favorite hot spots in Colorado. I walked over 25 miles over 3 days. We didn't put up a single bird in some exquisite land in Nebraska. The dogs and I found 6 roosters during the trip (all in Colorado). We shot 3 birds...

Opening Day 2023/2024 Season - Colorado

Opening day was interesting. The area where I do a lot of my hunting experienced really bad hail in both July and August. Many houses, equipment and fields were negatively impacted. I hunted all private land. The cover was really thick and crispy. The temperatures neared 70 degrees by 11 am...

    Bone Spurs - Question

Hello all, Echo (7) was just diagnosed with bone spurs in her right front paw. She has and continues to walk with an occasional, but noticable limp. We have her on a low dose, anti-inflammatory. The vet said that there is nothing more we can do. I say BS to that. Has anyone else experienced...

Our Final Hunt of the Season

There is a lot of fresh snow in Eastern, Colorado. The drifts were so significant that it was hard to get at the cover where the birds were hiding. We walked 13.6 miles and we had our chances. Fortunately, I made one shot count. I will work on my shooting in the offseason.

    Snow Day!

It was a fantastic day in Eastern, Colorado. Birds were around, but they were difficult to pursue. The snow was really deep, which made navigating to cover really challenging. We managed to whiff on a layup (shotgun slipped as I mounted it), and then we took a rooster later in the day.

Some Days Just Go Better Than Others

This trip was fantastic and it probably ends my season. I walked 8.9 miles in just over 6 hours, and executed on my only 3 opportunities of the day. We saw a lot of birds, but the vast majority of them spotted us before we could get close. Echo and Josey did really well in locating the only...

26 Miles of Walking Over 2.5 Days...& we Finally have Something to Show for It.

I am still not shooting well, but we are on the board this season. Marinating my birds now. I hope that everyone is having a better season than me.

    Trip 2 - Yuma - Yuck

Echo, Josey and I did a day trip to Yuma this week. -90% private - places where I have limited out in an hour (many times) -Weather was warm; 28 degrees to start, 56 degrees by noon -10.5 miles of walking -The dogs located 4 hens; we flushed another one at 60 yards -Echo got on a rooster that...

Not an Ideal Start to the Season

It was hard to post this video. Just an epic failure on my part. I will be better the next time out. Observations (besides my crap shooting) -Drought has impacted Eastern Colorado -Farmers were forced to hay everything -There are birds but they're hard to get at -Josey is a reliable gun dog...

Better Shooting - A Colorado Limit

I apologize for the video issue. The GoPro recorded this trip in "Time Warp" mode. Horrendous. I didn't select it. Not sure what happened? The first bird I killed at about 30 yards. I almost didn't pull the trigger because of the difficulty of the shot (away and crossing to my right). Glad I...

    Poor Shooting

A Cool Beginning to the Upland Season

It was real warm in Colorado on Saturday. We still managed to get our limit. Here is the video of Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Only the highlights. I hope that everyone has had a successful season to date.

    Hunting Colorado Chickens

Our first prairie chicken hunt is a success! 9 miles of walking, 525 miles of driving & we execute on our only opportunity! Echo has been on CBD for 2 months. Her seizures have been materially reduced. We are hopeful.

    Seizure

This morning Echo (5.5 year old lab), went into a 1 minute seizure. We had never witnessed her have a seizure. Following the first seizure, she seemed to have another short one, and she subsequently threw up her breakfast. We are planning to take her to the vet tomorrow, unless she has another...

    THE 225 MILE U TURN

https://huntfishgolfwork.com/the-225-mile-u-turn/ I am not sure how to get better with in the field medical treament? I can recall almost every hunt that Echo and I have experienced over the last 5 years. There are some hunts however that stand out because something remarkable occurs. Most...

    A Colorado Upland Hunt - January 24, 2021

When we arrived in bird country, we were greeted with cold temperatures and 2 inches of fresh snow. Given the conditions, we expected to see a lot of birds and we hoped that they would hold tight. Unfortunately, the majority of the cocks got up out of shotgun range. We were lucky to take two...

    An Unfortunate Miss

Missing sucks. Missing your only opportunity at a rooster on the final steps in a 13 mile walk is deflating. The negative feeling is amplified when your bird dog does everything right, and you fail to deliver. I have had a good season with the shotgun. Almost everything that I have aimed at has...

Josey's First Hunt on Wild Birds - January 3, 2021

With Echo on injured reserve, I decided to take Josey (18m) out east on her first ever upland hunt. Candidly, I was apprehensive despite the training successes we had been experiencing. Josey is very sensitive, and she has not yet responded to collar conditioning. Additionally, we have struggled...
